Time again for another wonderful but frustrating Topstraps Longrange Rimfire Match at my range. I'll be here from Friday thru Sunday (Sept 7, 8 and 9th) from about 9:00 AM till it starts to get dark. Don't wait until evening hoping for calm winds and hope to shoot since there may not be enough time to finish up the ones in line.

Match will be the same as last month since everyone seemed to like it. 85 targets worth 1 point each. Distances will be 25, 37, 50, 62, 76, 87, 100, 112, 125, 137, 150, 162, 175, 187 and 197 yards of varying sizes and shapes. I will allow up 5 sighters the shooter can use at whatever stages they wish. I'll also let each shooter take a couple shots to check their zero before starting.

There is a max cost limit of $8.00/50 rounds for the 22 rimfire ammo based on either Champion Shooters Supply website or Ammoseek, no tuners or any of that other Benchrest type stuff allowed and no fancy Benchrest style rests only bipods or sandbags to support the gun. Any 22 rimfire gun/scope is allowed. I am still trying to keep this from coming an equipment race with high end custom guns and scopes. I'd like to keep the cost of the gun/scope combination under $2500, there are other local matches the really high end equipment and ammo can compete in against other high end equipment where they can battle it out for being top dog.

A donation of $10.00 per each entry and you can re-enter if you wish but have to get in line again. The match winner will get a free entry at the next shoot and there will be at least 1 $25.00 drawing and usually another based on number of entries. Lately it has been two drawings and might even get to three the way things are going. The range officer/scorer has final say, we tend to favor the shooter if there is a question about a nicker which is counted. When the target is painted I'll check to verify a hit/nick for scoring.

The firing line is covered and there are two benches so two shooters can shoot the course of fire together. I just made new target racks to replace some that a friend made and loaned for the range and I also added a new set of 4moa circles at each distance for the metallic sight shooters. They look large until you look at them without magnification. They are very doable and add a new challenge to this longrange game.

100 rounds should be sufficient with 85 targets and some type of special final stage to challenge your skills and also a few checking zero rounds.

Any questions my email is [email protected]

Allow about an hour to shoot the course, if that is too long then on the first of the Month Butch has a 50 round match that only takes about 20 minutes on the first weekend of the month. Personally I like to shoot once I sit down and get my monies worth.

Short video clip of the target racks that may be used or maybe not this month but shows the new peep sight targets.

Hope to see everyone.

I have a really good idea on how to allow any and all the guns someone wants to bring can compete with. Still have ammo cost limit and no benchrest type equipment but they can all shoot the same targets but won't necessarily compete with a really high end gun with a relatively stock setup.

Bring whatever you want based on the limits I posted and we can give it a trial run this weekend. I'll go over with the idea with my Son and tweak if needed but I'm excited seeing how it'll let everyone compete and have fun.

New Longrange Rimfire Match Format and Classes

Regular Class

Shooters with a total value of $2500 or less for gun/scope and mount based on fair market value the match format will remain the same as always with hits on targets worth 1 point each unless specified on match day for a smaller or special target.

There will still be s strict limit of $8.00/50 on ammo costs based on Champion Shooters Supply or Ammoseek.com. No special sales or dealer priced discounts, just what anyone can go buy it for. Also no benchrest type equipment such as tuners, bloop tubes or fancy rests allowed. Bipods and sandbags only unless I approve it day of the shoot.

Peep/Metallic Sights Class

Same as above for regular class shooters scoring wise and also gun and ammo restrictions. There are new 4moa metallic sight targets hanging off the right side of each rack except for 197 yards and it’s on the left. You will shoot the same target the same number of times that the rack it’s fastened to calls for. Example is the Humbler, it has 10 targets, you shoot the peep sight target 10 times. I think the score will be very comparable to the regular class scores. They start off smaller but progressively get larger at each distance but still look like pin pricks thru a metallic sight.

Big Dog Class

Shooters with a total value over $2500 for gun/scope and mount based on fair market value the point values will be different. Any rack with a descending or changing sized targets will be scored from 1 thru however many targets are on the rack.

You only get 5 shots and if there are 7 targets such as on the bowling pin rack you have to shoot all 5 shots in order. If you want maximum point value you’d start on target 3 and shoot 3, 4, 5, 6 and target 7. If you miss you shoot at the missed one till you hit it. If you start on target 1 then you can only shoot 1 thru 5.

There will only be 3 sighters allowed for Big Dog shooters to use on any rack you feel it will be of help No extra points given for non use of a sighter.

Next year there may be a KYL (know your limits) rack in each match to add to the shooters strategy. Shoot all you can for a big score but if you miss you lose all points accumulated on that rack. Knowing your limits can be a good thing on this stage.

Big Dog competitors will not be included in the free match if they win that particular day the other classes are in. Next year if this is flies I’ll take the scores of each Big Dog competitor and get their average for the Top Dog and present a trophy proclaiming them Top Dog and all the bragging rights that will go with it.

I think this solves all the problems I’ve been agonizing over about not wanting to lose any of the shooters that come for the enjoyment and also keeping the ones that find the competition and upgrading to better equipment a challenge to see how well they can do against other high level shooters with high end equipment.
