Gunsmithing Torque question Remington 700

Just bedded my Remington 700 in a McMillan stock with pro-bed 2000 (what I had on hand). Now using my wheeler fat wrench I torqued it down to 45, that was it without tearing up the screws. I don't think it will go any further, is this good, do I just go out and shoot. Oh, yeah the stock came with pillars installed.

You should be able to get 65 inch pounds with ease.

65 inch pounds so long as your using the right bit on your tourqe wrench.

I agree and use 65 INCH pounds as well on all of my rifles.

What bottom metal? Factory Remington cast bottom metal is not rated to 65 inch pounds. Most of the time you'll be GTG but anything over 45 to 50 the bottom metal can split at the screw holes.

Bottom metal is PT&G steel, but if I try anything over 45, I start tearing up the plain old screws. Probably get some good torx head screws

45 will work. Look at the instructions that came with the wheeler fat wrench, it talks about all that and goes down to 30 I believe for some actions and stocks. Get you some better screws and then you'll be GTG.

Just a small question. You are using Inch pounds and not Foot pounds right. There is a big difference.

The wrench he's using is only inch pounds.

OP....you just need better screws, order some from Brownells or Midway.

I've never seen a remy bdl split at 65 inch pounds.
