Hello everyone. I was hoping for some help. I am loading some subsonic .308 loads. I am using hornady 208gr amax bullets. Federal brass. enlarged flash hole. CCI mag. primers and 14 grains of trailboss. I am at case capacity without compressing powder too much. I have not reached the velocity I am looking for yet. What is the best powder to try next. I want to keep my cases as full as possible to minimize any problems. Any info would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Re: trailboss alternative

What velocity are you looking for ? I load a 180 gr. RN in front of 10.8 gr. Trailboss, standard primer and flash hole. Gives me a consistant 1045 - 1050 fps out of a 20" .308. 14 gr. seems a little high although I have never loaded the 208 or 220 gr. bullets due to my 1-12 twist.

Re: trailboss alternative

I was thinking clays or red dot. Does 10.5grs. of clays pretty much fill the case? And does it burn fairly clean? Thanks for your help

Re: trailboss alternative

IMO you are not going to get anything that gives case fill like Trail Boss does. But then that is why it was created. To give those types of velocities to the Cowboy Action shooters.

Have you ever used a Dacron Filler?? I use Red Dot with a dacron filler to give good case fill with the filler. But I also like Trail Boss. When I can pick up a large container or two I will stop using Red Dot and filler for my Gallery Loads. And switch all of them to Trail Boss. It just works too well. Tom.

You must have a hell of a twist rate to get a 208 to stabilise at such a low speed?

Re: trailboss alternative

Twist rate is 1in10. Barrel length is 22in. I'm not sure of the bullet would be stable at any significant range I've only shot this load at 50 yards. The 220 round nose interlocks I tried first key holed a little.

It fills it up about 3/4 of the way IIRC, I never really noticed any fouling problems so I guess it burns clean.

I shoot the 220 rn out of my 10 twist barrel without any problems.
