They are never too young to introduce to the barbell. Nothing structured for the 9 yr old but the 12 yr is probably ready for a once or twice a week routine dependent upon hormone levels.

caveat... if you don't know proper form for the big five, you should learn for yourself first.

    Re: Training with my Kids

Swimming laps,it can really build endurance and strength. My girl is 9 and has been on a swimming team since age 4. It has done wonders for her playing soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball. She is always at the top for endurance and seems much stronger compared to the other girls her age.

I really think its the swim team. Now, she is not the fastest runner but can hang tough the whole game w/o slowing down. When it comes to needing power from her core, its there when she needs it and is not easily pushed around. example...basketball

My gym does not allow kids under 12 in the weight/cardio area so we improvise with other things in the basket court like wind sprints, sit ups, pull ups as you do.

oh yea and to make it fun...lol do it with her/him and let her/him out do you every now and then..

I think the main thing is to have them doing some type of training year round.

I know I am ranting at this point and haven't directly answered your question but thought I would just share what goes on in my neck of the woods.

Day hikes in the mountains are always good. Thats what my dad and I used to do growing up. Good endurance training, and a good chance to teach them about the outdoors.

    Re: Training with my Kids

I would love to do Day hikes in the Mts, but not many around Memphis TN. Swimming laps in the pond is a winner, Weight training will proceed starting Tuesday, plus a health dose of Pushup's Situp's and Pullup's. I set the example all the way, I'm not a Active duty Officer any more but it runs in my blood. Today we did sprint work, 100yrd,50, 40 30, 20, plus 10yrd square run, side step, backward run and sprint, Ran lines that i painted one our street, one of the many bennies of living in the country.

I think making fitness fun is the primary goal at young ages. That way they'll associate a healthy lifestyle with having a good time and hopefully stay active and adventurous their entire life.

Some of the things we've started doing with our kids
    - swimming
    - biking
    - hiking (kids love to scramble on rocks)
    - paddling / kayaking (if you have access to a river / lake)
    - backyard baseball / kickball games
    - backyard bad mitten games / volleyball games (great hand / eye coordination and fun as hell)

I also love the idea of some friendly competition if you're doing more focused training. Each of you will have different baseline strength / speed / endurance...but maybe a reward for the one who progresses the most would help keep it fun / motivate them.
