I have a buddy who has a 3 gun match in MO. He then needs to fly straight to CA for a wedding. I told him I'm pretty sure he can't be fling into commiefornia with and AR, 30 round mags and a pistol with 17 round mags. For those in the know, confirm or deny. Hate to see him get jammed up in CA. I thought the way in may not be the problem but flying out and having to go through inspection with that rig could be a big problem.

I mean it’s only a problem if he gets caught. He’d be better off shipping the rifle home.

the airlines don’t enforce law, they don’t know a 30 round mag from a. Belt fed and don’t care.

It sounds like your friend is actually going to be doing something in CA, specifically going to attend the wedding.
As such he's not just doing a stopover at the airport.

I'm assuming this means he has to like you know pickup his bags from the baggage claim, then take them with him as he goes somewhere and then go check them back in when he gets on the return flight home.

He would be much better served simply shipping the guns back home.

If he separates the upper from the lower it’s not an “assault weapon” he just can’t put it together or he’ll be manufacturing an AW. mags are no big deal since they’re legal to possess.

Ah but you forget Ca has their own stricter definitions and being in possession of certain things is also a no no. A big no no is a lower that has quick magazine change capabilities. Must have boolit button or be fixed in the receiver.

but again none of it matters unless he gets caught with it. The airlines simply don’t care.

Correct. The re-check is where I thought ne may have a problem. Doesn't seem worth the risk. I'll let him know he should set up a ship with his ffl.

I live in California I know the laws here quite well. He’ll be fine if he separates the upper from the lower.

That so? Last I knew anything > 10 rounds = felony no ifs ands or buts
We had what was called freedom week a few years ago. It was a week long free for all on mags. I think they estimated around a few million mags were bought that week and brought into the state. Idk how they got that number, but that’s what the rumor is.

I'm not a lawer but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once.

I would remove the magazine release and separate the upper and lower. Maybe even take off the pistol grip.

The laws are so convoluted that most cops dont even know what they are and make shit up half the time.

They may or may not ask to see whats in the case.

This is the dumbest thread ever. If the answer to your question is not patently obvious, your "friend" should get legal advice from a lawyer.
Thanks for the help pal. I had told him it was a bad idea and most of the replies here confirm it. Ive directed him here to read this. Pretty sure he's decided to ship or try to send them back with somebody who is driving.

That’s what I would do. I hate California politics but I’d hate even more for California to make me a criminal.

He can fly into Vegas and rent a car. Ditto the same method for New York and New Jersey. If he happens to get diverted into California he should get his bags and get a rental car and proceed on his way. In most cases you get flagged and then get into trouble when checking bags in.

Or he can arrange to have the range ship them home for him.

The latter is his best bet, unless he thinks he would need them for some reason.
