Here's to that small group of men who gathered quietly and at great risk to themselves and their families to devise a plan to throw off the chains of an oppressive government. Farmers, lawyers, carpenters, shop keepers, blacksmiths and every other profession of their era stood shoulder to shoulder facing the Atlantic. They raised a finger and then raised a rifle in defiance of the most powerful nation in the world so that they could be free men. Many of them lost everything, including their lives to create something bigger than themselves and left it in the safe keeping of generations to follow. For us, their sons and daughters, to take for granted and squander something so precious would be the greatest disgrace of our forefathers. As we gather this weekend, enjoy the barbeque, family, friends, a glass of cheer and fireworks, but more importantly, remember the responsibility and privilege that has been bestowed upon us. Remember the sacrifice of those who established the torch of liberty, those who have offered their lives in it's defense and those who continue to carry it today. Happy Independence Day people!
