TRG-22 in .260 or .308

Had another post trying to decide between sako and a surgeon. Ive decided to go with the Sako and it brought up another question. A .260 or .308?

I do alot of hunting, coyotes and deer mostly. I will also be spending alot of time at the range. I believe the F-class shoots only to 800yards in the town i live in but will still shoot paper to 1000.

I do not reload but and going to start eventually. The biggest animal i will probably shoot will be a mule deer. Furthest ill shoot will also only be 400 yards at an animal.

Ive heard alot of good things about both and havent found much on the .260. Going into the local shop and buying .260 ammo is pretty tough but i can order match grade ammo online.

Any help is appreciated.

I will also be putting a surpressor on this rifle, i do not care about barrel life, re-barreling is not too expensive and gives me a reason to get a custom barrel.

Either will work very well for the uses you described. The .260 will have an advantage at long range targets, but the .308 will deliver more energy at shorter hunting distances. Both are extremely accurate.

If you don't reload, I would lean towards the .308. Much better selection of factory ammo at much lower prices.

One other thing I forgot to mention. If you use your TRG for F-class, the .308 will allow you to shoot in ther F/TR class against other .308s and .223s. If you go with the .260, you will have to shoot open class which is open to any caliber. You would be more competitive in the F/TR class than open, if that matters to you.

Just start with the 308.

When you start reloading and plan to re-barrel then you can get a .260 barrel and reload for 260.

I have a 26" 260 TRG and a 20" 308 TRG. The 260 is less handy with the 26 inch barrel for hunting purposes, especially if hanging a suppressor off the end. I do find the 260 a little more pleasant to shoot. People always comment how easy it is to shoot well. But if you do not reload, I would go 308. If shooting comps the longer barrel may be of benefit. If you place more emphasis on hunting and improvised shooting positions, get the 20 inch 308.

Don't sweat it too much, they are both awesome.

Thanks for the input. I dont reload as of now but plan on starting with this new rifle.

What cartridge is easier to reload? I dont have a problem buying boxes of ammo online. The rifle i had before this was a 7mm RUM and a box of shells cost me $65

They both will be easy to load for. There is a great sticky on the home page here on reloading. It helped me a lot.

Yeah i just read through a couple of the posts. Also ordered a couple books off amazon i will skim through before i even start buying stuff for reloading.

FYI Federal is coming out with their FGMM in 260 Rem soon. You can also order match ammo form places like McCourt-http://www.mccourtmunitionsllc.com/ Black hills, HSM and others.

The thing that is almost always a concern with long range is wind drift. Your odds of a hit are much in favor of the 260 compared to the 308.

If your wanting to go with a factory barreled 22 in 260 I'm pretty sure all are sold and no more coming.

Having owned both calibers I don't think the 260 offers anything the 308 doesn't at 600 yards or less. I say go for 308 because it's more common to purchase ammo and has more energy at said range. If recoil is an issue put a suppressor or a brake on it.

I'd have to disagree with you on that by the numbers as well as actual experience.

I went to JBM to look up the numbers for a typical load for 308 and 260.

260 rem/142 grain at 2850fps shows 1400 ftlbs of energy at 600Y with 17.7" drift in a 10 mph wind.

308 Win/168grain at 2650fps shows 1168 ftlbs of energy at 600y with 26.3" drift in the same wind condition. Even 175's at 2600fps only show 1292 ftlbs of energy.

Just a week ago I took a guy out to help him get his dope figured out at 600Y in very similar conditions as above. He had his 308 with 168's. I brought along a few of my rifles. One very similar to 260. He was amazed at how much easier it was to hit a 14" steel with my rifles at that distance. He had a tough time connecting with his 308 because of the wind. The story is always the same. This has happened with me 3 times now, on 3 different occasions, with 3 different 308 shooters and their rifles.

That same day another friend was right beside us at 600Y letting his friend with "0" long range experience shoot his 6.5 Creedmoor. He was able to easily hit the 14" plate and he hit the 6" on his first try.

On accuracy I agree, to a point. It depends on the conditions.
I switch barrels on my TRG-22 and comparing F-Class scores over a few years the 308 keeps up with the 260 out to 600yds <span style="font-weight: bold">IF</span> the conditions are fairly constant. If the wind gets up and/or becomes twitchy, the 260 is definitely better. From 600 to a mile - no contest.

I have a TRG 22 in 308, when the barrel is shot out it will get a new .260 put on. I tried several friends 260 latel;y and I should have gotten one of those years ago.

I picked up a 260 Remington in the TRG rifle from Europtics last summer. It was my first rifle in the 260 and I really like it. It is mild in the recoil department and easy to reload for. I have been able to get out to 300 yards with it and am amazed at the groups (bipod on bench) I am able to get. I took it out during buck season, but did not see any buck. On the other hand I have hunted with an old Remington 660 in 308 and have taken untold deer with it over the past 30 years and one bear. The 308 is also easy to reload for and with my standard reload I have taken deer at all ranges from 30 yard shots in blackberry thickets to just over 400 yards on strip mine property. I was torn between getting the TRG in 260 or the 308. In hindsight I'm very happy with the choice I made. I plan on wreaking havoc with the local groundhog population with it this summer. Give the 260 your consideration.

Well I ended up getting a TRG-22 in .260 from EuroOptic. It was their last one in a 26" barrel.

I will be getting a surpressor for it and do plan on reloading it. Very excited to get out and shoot. Too bad i have to wait a couple more months till i leave afghanistan

Huh. I tried to buy one a few weeks ago and they told me that they had none left.

Congrats on the the rifle purchase. If I was going to purchase a TRG 22 that is the caliber that I would buy.
