Trigger pull weight question

So most of my shooting will just be target practice. However, this rifle will be used for hunting.
Now with that said, what would you guys recommend as far as a trigger pull weight?
Rifle is a 700 SPS tactical that will be getting a Timney trigger. Probably one with a narrow shoe.

I tend to run mine around 2.5# up to around 3#. As long as the break is crisp, heavier would be OK. Many will say I run mine a bit light for a hunitng rig, but I've never had any issues.

3.5# isn't a bad weight to go with. Personally, I don't like light triggers on hunting rifles due to safety issues. Sometimes, if the bolt is racked too hard it can cause the sear to jump if the trigger is too light...or if the gun were to fall, moot if you simply don't load.

My everything rifle has close to a 5# trigger but it's pretty crisp. I just set it up so that I could rack the bolt as hard as I could and hit the back of the tang wit a plastic mallet without going off.

That said, I've had a 1.5# 2-stage trigger that never gave me issues, I've also hunted with a benchrest rifle that had trigger weight of around 8oz...but I only loaded that one easily and when I had a target in my sights.

Your Timney will come pre-adjusted to 3 lbs. I am sure it will feel about right for your application. I adjust all of my rifles to 2.5 lbs, but 3 will do just fine for hunting, especially if you use gloves.

+1. I prefer 2.5. All my hunting rifles are in the 2.5 to 3# range, but 90% or more of my hunting is Australia and Africa and I almost never use gloves.

I keep mine at around 2lbs, any less and I don't think it will be safe for hunting.

I run my 6mmREM & 308 target rigs around 6-7OZ, if I wanted to use them for varmint hunting Id keep them the way they are, deer hunting is a different story, there I use 19-20oz triggers.

I'll order from Timney and have them adjust it to 2.5#.
Am sure that they will do a better job of adjusting that then me.
That should keep it safe.

2.5# should be fine. I have set my Winchester 7MM Mag for 2.5# and have never had a problem. Good hunting.

Personally, I would go with 2lbs. I don't think a trigger under 2lbs for anything except BR is wise. With a good quality trigger like a Timney you shouldn't have a problem. But then again, I don't walk around with one in the chamber either.

I prefer my single stage triggers at 2.5lbs or heavier. I'm actually a bit irked that I can't get my SSS Savage trigger above 2lbs.

Well just got off the phone from talking with Timney. Went and ordered the 510 with a narrow trigger set at 2.5#.

Should have in a week or so.

Just curious, why the narrow shoe? Is there an advantage? I always used to buy the wider trigger shoe add-on for my rifles and most of my customers used to do this as well although it was for hunting rifles. Is it just a matter of personnal preference or is the narrow shoe preferred for accuracy reasons?

My preference.
Have not used a wide trigger and all of my other rifles have what I would consider a standard narrow trigger compared to the wide Timney.

I have all my triggers at 16-20 oz just where I have gotten use to them. I like the narrow shoe to that is why I dont run timneys on most of my guns.

Got my 2.5# Timney today.
Took my time and did the install myself.

The narrow trigger shoe is just right for what I'm used to.
And this feels sooo much better over the factory X Mark Pro.
