Hello all!

I have a REAP-IR unit which worked fine for a while, but recently has been giving me trouble.

Mine is a 35mm REAP-IR (mfr 2016) which developed a strange issue where it would show a split screen on boot and not function (goes to a white fuzzy unresponsive screen)- but if you turn it on and off several times, eventually you get a "good" boot and it works. It will work fine until you turn it off - then same issue again, turn it on and off several times until you get another 'good' boot.

This sounds like a software/firmware issue. Hardware either works or it doesn't..

I contacted trijicon, and they told me to send it in, sent me a UPS / RMA label- sounded like they were going to take care of it.
After about 4 weeks, they contact me saying the repair would cost me nearly $5K (new core, new main board).
This doesn't sound right, as it works *sometimes* if you keep turning it on and off. It really sounds like a software issue.

If they cannot cover the repair I will have them send it back, as it's not worth the repair cost, I could just buy another, and this does work provided you do the magic chicken bone dance and turn it on and off 4-6 times.

Has anyone figured out how to self-reset or address this issue? Or if anyone knows anyone sympathetic at Trijicon who can help out.. I don't mind paying for the repair, but not the whole value of the unit to do it.

Thanks in advance!

If this is 100 percent not user error and if it is purely just the electronicS failing then you should try to escalate the complaint as high as possible. Post it on their social media if you have to. A $10,000 unit is bricked because of some manufacturers error, or poor component usage should be highlighted and people need to be aware.

But if there was anything you did (extreme temperatures, broken seals, rough handling) then it is probably on you.

Externally aside from a little wear here and there it's in great shape- it was also never mounted to any high recoil weapons (or the dreaded SCAR 17). .223 with a flash hider barrel shouldn't kill it :(

It worked fine, then after one range outing late January with the AR, this :(
I even detached it and drove to and from the range with it in the provided storage case so it wouldn't get banged around..

Update:

Trijicon got back to me. They are willing to discount the repair so it is a hair over $3K. Not great, but better.

My first question is whether a new 3 year warranty applies, obviously it's a very expensive unit, and failures have happened.

Here is their response:
Thank you for your inquiry. The warranty does not renew with the repair service however; Trijicon does stand behind their work and we always try to take care of our customer. We do take things into consideration on a case by case basis. Thank you.

So.. what would you all do- pay and take your chances, or take the old unit back and try to use it through the wonkiness?

If I pay I will ask for the old parts back- I have a friend who is an electronics expert, and in this case, there is nothing to lose if he can repair or utterly FUBAR the old parts.

Thanks!

$3K is reasonable for that unit, as it sounds like they’ll replace all of the internals, which is basically like getting a new unit.
