I have once-fired factory-ammo brass (Federal 300wm)and i am not sure do i need to trim them to length? I measured them they are around 2.616inch long so from my point of view i need to trim them to 2.610 which the book says.
And another question is how often to trim the cases? i was considering to trim them to length everytime after fired and before reload. But still not sure. need confirmation from experienced reloaders

cheers

Re: trim trim trim

max length on the 300 win mag is 2.620". I tend to trim when it's approaching the max length after resizing just to be sure of an easy chamber. At least I don't trim every time to 2.610". It's better to shoot than to prep the brass.

Re: trim trim trim

Let your necks grow a bit, as it creates a better gas seal--soot on your necks and upper shoulders is gas blow-by. You'll have a 'trim to length', a 'max case length' and then a length that conforms to your actual throat.

Ex: 308 is 2.005", max is 2.015" and in my Savage 10FP, I can go 2.020", so I'll generally trim to between 2.010" and 2.015" to be safe, but both are a good deal longer than the proverbial 2.005" length.

Hey Chris,

How do you measure this to know what length is safe in a particular gun?

Thanks,
Rath

Re: trim trim trim

Sinclair sells a gage for measuring it. Size a case cut it short about .2 and insert the plug long. place it in chamber and close the bolt. extract it and take a measurement. Do this a couple times to make sure your measurment is good. Trim brass .005 to .01 shorter than your measurment.
