Tripod Suggestions

I’d like to ask for tripod suggestions. My son and I are into rimfire, I’m a little longer in the tooth so I won’t be jumping around from stage to stage. My current need would be for scope mounting, cleaning and mostly working on our HEAVY set up’s. I would like to use it at the range from time to time, weight isn’t a huge issue.

I get buy once cry once but I really don’t see spending 1500 or more for my current needs. I’m currently looking at Leofoto and Fatboy ( fat boy is really more than I’d like to spend) . Leofoto is currently running a pretty good Shot Show sale. I understand they are China company knocking off RRS products.

I’d rather have an overkill set up. I’d really appreciate some recommendations.

I see more Leofoto than anything at PRS matches. It’s what I run as well with no complaints. My main use is glassing with binos but have shot off mine in the past. If I wanted something for hard use I’d probably go with a higher end brand but not worth it to me for what I use it for. I will say Fatboys are nice though.

Leofoto, Artcise or Inorrel. Not sure but they all look like they’re made in the same factory. 3 of us that ride and shoot matches together, all three of us run Artcise AS90C tripods. I think it’s max load is 88lbs.

+1 You see alot of budget tripods used in PRS at local matches.

I run 3 different fat boys and they are amazing. I had a leofoto and an innorel prior and the Fatboy are awesome. From hunting, spotting and prs they are just so stable

Locking apex is fantastic for use as a rear tripod support, and for just moving short distances between stages.

Otherwise, the Leofoto SO-362C was my go to for years.

Inverted is a must have, and 2 sections are fantastic for rigidity and quick deployment.

LH-55 ball head for hands free panning at matches and easy cleaning at home, even with 25 lb rifles. I’d probably go LH-40 if I was doing it over again though, since I rarely/never shoot off it. If I’m shooting off it, I run a RRS Anvil 30 - but that’s pretty much only for NRL Hunter matches.

42.5mm legs in the $700-800 price bracket should be pretty solid.

Why would you go with a LH-40 over a LH-55?

from my shooting film days, I chose Gitzo, Manfrotto, RRS. Yes, their stuff is expensive but they put in the product development time and quality in to the products they sell. When I was supporting thousands of dollars in glass, it was worth it to me.

I still use those same setups now because the quality is built in and they last

My rifles and scopes are also in the thousands of dollars category. So why cheap out on what you’re counting on to hold them up?

We easily spend $5000+ on the rifle and well over $2000 for a scope. And Binos are the same… over $2 or $3k.

or
SO-362CX with a LH 55LSC ( not really sure which 55 model hybrid , low profile)

I get the SO is inverted 2 section but what's the main difference in the heads and their different applications? ? As I mentioned this will mainly be used in the shop but also want to take it to the range some as well.

Why would you go with a LH-40 over a LH-55?

Weight, size, cost. If it's just for glassing, the LH-40 is beefy enough. You don't need the stability and adjustment resolution of a 55 for occasional shooting.

MA head offers quick and easy adjustment for shooting, but requires two hands (one on glass or rifle, the other on the lever).

Ball head offers hands free panning, which is hugely beneficial for spotting at matches, so you can run also a timer, keep score, reload mags, etc.
