Tripod woes

So I just purchased a leofoto ball head off another forum member, but don’t have a tripod yet. Whould it be smart for me to buy an aluminum rrs, over a two vets carbon? Or another carbon/aluminum option? I really do t want to spend 1k+ on a rrs. so I’m open to options. I’d like right right at or sub 500 (closer to 300 would be cooler)

Personally I bite the bullet and run a RRS 34L and it's awesome. Otherwise the Leofoto LN-364C for $430 a sweet deal and should provide most of the stability as the RRS for a little more weight.

Is the rrs aluminum one not a player? Is the carbon rrs really 700$ more stable or am I buying a weight to stability ratio?

Those are basically table top models with a max height of 17inches..? I am sure they are solid kit but I would think you are looking for something a little taller?

In my experience there is no comparison between an aluminum vs carbon fiber when it comes to stability. The aluminum legs will always have considerable more flex in them than CF legs. You can make AL work but will have to accept a bigger wobble zone. My observations from running a Manfrotto 055 AL vs shooting off an RRS CF 3 series

Everyone preaches the leofoto 364c. Which is clone/knock off of the rrs. The rt90c is also a knock off; also made of imported carbon fiber as the RRS and leofoto both are!!

i added a leofoto 75mm bowl head to my rt90c. after having it all in hand I would have bought. a qd arca-Swiss clamp and used the included 75mm bowl leveling base.

the ball head you already bought should also work on rt90. I had my Desmond ball head on rt90 before my “upgraded” leveling base showed up. Added some photos of each. Both will hold rifle. The 75mm bowl option seems to be what most guys are shooting off. I can get photos if you want anything more specific.

It’s the larger one. Does not have a “ball head” nor any stickers on legs.
Has a leveling base. I’ll attach single duplicate photo. Should be able to identify it in others photos then. The rt90c does not have a center column either which in the photos I believe it is collapsed at its lowest/most stable position.

No experience with two vets but I really like my Ln 364c. Sandsockgear tends to do some sales.

I’m curious about the aluminum vs carbon fiber legs. I’m using a Slik 700dx (same tripod as the Pig0311) with an RRS Anvil head. It works great but can anyone who has used both describe differences in feel/flex/wobble zone? I’d love to get RRS legs eventually, but right now I have less than $500 into tripod setup and it works pretty damn good.

Cant speak for your finances, but $1-200 is enough to make me consider/buy something. others & I have found to be a workable unit. What I do know is the leofoto and innorell rt90c seem to come from same region of Asia. Neither leofoto or innorell have any “permanent” branding. I have used leofotos countless times at matches. I have yet to find any differences (other than rt90c has padded grips on all three legs; not one like leofoto)

The three you have mentioned are all 40mm 10layer Imported carbon fiber. Not sure where the two-vets 40mike-Mike is manufactured. Or if a “assembled” in USA kinda thing.The other two are imported (stating it again: same region of Asia) .
Point is I would not spend the extra cash on a leofoto. As that brand is no different to me as the innorell brand. They are both clones.
As much as we use these Camara tripods for optics and rifles. I’d bet the best place to look/research would be the intended market for them. Camera guys doing news, broadcasting tv/movie or where ever you can find people in masses using the camera tripods..... for daily use with cameras or other equipment? (If they still do????)

For sure! I agree on both point buy once cry once & tripods are non-upgrade items. Not sure where your at. im on the Ohio-Pa border. If your near by; more than welcome to check out what I have.
On a note about the desmond w/ball head I bought originally for optics/LRF. it has taken two very hard tumbles both were in tough terrain and legs and center column extended. busted two pairs of vortex binos up beyond repair. The tripod and ball head showed no wear nor problems & vortex replaced binos both times very quickly. Lmao. Guess that speaks to there VIP warrenty.

Agreed for rifle support. Center column is great for optics imo. I have found quicker setup and easier adjustment with center column for optics. Mainly from others using at matches. If your not allowing others to use sure. However when I throw spotters out at matches I let everyone use if they want. Way easier to adjust height with center colum for the short stacks or giants! Lmao you know I’m the only right sized individual! lol

I have yet to use an aluminum tripod that comes close the solid feel of a carbon fiber. Regardless what is on it rifle or spotter. We typically shoot 6 stages bi-weekly PRS league through winter and weekly during rest of year. Lots of times guys that bring glass leave at stages so we are not moving stage to stage with them. Last match I was very interested to check out the vortex spotter (with MRAD reticle) guy had gotten, he had on slik aluminum. I’m used to being able to hold legs and rest/lean on tripod—- that’s a negative on that setup. Not saying there’s none out there but I haven’t seen one that compares to the 40mm carbon

CF/aluminum aluminum always picks up some weird optical shake with a crow wind, if it’s strong enough (much higher wind speed) the same effect comes in in the cf but honestly I think that’s the spotter and head acting as a wind catch, the cf in my opinion settles from any disturbance a whole lot quicker

lmao this is great! I’m also a recluse, but seems at matches and here most are ppl I can get along with.

when I first started shooting matches really blew me away the folks and attitudes. Don’t get me wrong times some DB’s show up but normally get ran out rather quick!
Can say that I’m the past few years I have made some of the best friends a guy can have. Those guys are true brothers from other mothers! Off topic but excited as we are all taking some road trips and shooting two-day matches this year. Unsupervised ! Going to be a riot!!!

I am not versed well enough to know how much of the stability you get from CF is the quality of the apex, on a cf tripod, you have a massive apex on a rrs tvc tripod spaces your legs out a bit, giving you some torsional stability while panning, all of my aluminum tripods at full leg extension have pretty near toothpick sized inner legs as well and I can’t imagine that helps, but all that being said some ppl are never gonna grab an rrs because of the diminishing return on investment, is a Mercedes worth five or six yugos? If the yugo gets you to work everyday? I am a firm believer in buy once cry once but my rrs cost as much as my first rem700 5r, I bet I have enough scrap tripod laying around my gun room to have bought the rrs years ago

I’d imagine we all go through this addiction. I actually had a mental intervention about my bag buying. Especially when offered at “deal” .

my first season I showed up with a custom rig and two Cheesy home made bags with corn filling haha. went though the wiebad trials of the fortune cookie and mini ‘ berry bag ...
Bought a used game changer with straps and realized the difference of fill and design. Shortly after I met Tom (awesome guy) and now a preach the armegeddon gospel. Only things o carry at matches is sticky gamechanger and its mini twin. I will use a small “fat bag” on certain props (was anti pump pillow for longest time) but well they do work! Someone that has never shot off a prop under time & im friendly competition will never understand what 1-2 extra impacts are worth!

For the money, the Innorel RT90C is a great product for the money. I just got mine 2 days ago to replace another cf tripod I had. It is a beast. The only thing I wish it had was spring loaded leg levers (adjusting to different angles) I do believe Two vets 40mm tripod has that feature.
