I'm trying to put together several nice-looking displays for some courses I teach, using various types of ammunition. For example, one case will be less-lethal shells, with an intact shell, and a shell dismantled above it. Another will be 40mm less lethal, with the same layout. Of course, there will be the other displays showing the rounds we will be using in the courses.
I want the displays to be small enough to pass around the class, and have a hinged lid so they can actually take them out and look at them.
I know-- I want a lot.
I can always get display cases at the local hobby stores, like Michaels. But it's the inside stuff I'm having trouble finding.
I've searched locally, and found no suppliers of foam suitable for displays. I was thinking of something like plastazote, but there are many different types and thicknesses.
Some well-meaning co-workers have brought in samples of foam, but the samples are all off-color, and look like something used inside of seat cushions.
So, I'm back to trying to find the right stuff. If I cannot find nice foam, I may have to use the upholstery foam, cut it, then coat it with fabric.
Some of the displays come with batting- the cottony stuff used inside of stuffed animals. This won't work, either, because it doesn't cut well, and doesn't hold its shape.
I hate to say this, but money is really no object at this point for a quality product.
So, any ideas?
