I've inherited what appears to be a Model 98 Mauser.
It's currently chambered in 8mm-06.
I've shot it many years ago with my dad and while it's not a precision rifle by any stretch, it is a solid shooter.
Markings are:
AS FA ANK ARA 1948 Serial number 31443.
I plan to rebarrel it and give it a decent stock. It already has scope mounts installed, a new safety, and the bolt handle bent.

My question is whether or not this action is strong enough for a 300 Win Mag or should I go with the good old 30 ought 6?

I have access to a machine shop to do any bolt modifications, etc.

I'm also building this rifle as a hobby. I'm not worried about the time or work involved in a magnum conversion.

Thanks.
Rob.

If the marking on it are purely Turkish with no german markings to be seen, then it is questionable. Turkish mausers are all over the place as far as quality. Large numbers were bought from German companies and re- stamped, and are as solid as any. Some of the Turkish ones are solid after they got the heat treat thing figured out.

Trouble is though, the pure Turkish ones are really hard to sort out.

sarco has commercial model Mause 98 actions complete with trigger and bottom metal for less than $400. PTG has a Mauser trueing kit for persons with out a machine shop. The actions need a little TLC. I’ve built and still building various rifles on them. Lonther Walter makes long chambered barrels that are great for these projects. Cost is $250-$450 per barrel. 25-06, 30-06, 7mm RM, 458, 6.5x55, 270, etc, are just come of the most recent builds I’ve done. just food for thought if your really wanting to play with a Mauser. No matter what direction you go, rebarrel what your looking at or buying an action understand your being for warned. Mausers are addictive!

I neglected to mention that tuning the feed lips for reliability with a magnum size cartridge is a real nightmare sometimes. One more reason to stay with the standard .473' case head.
