Hello out there,

I am planning a new build for a 300 Win Mag. The use will be primarily for hunting big game and occasional paper punching at 600 to 1,000 yards. For hunting I plan to use the 165 or 180 gr Nosler Partitions, same weight for Barnes X; while for paper punching I would go as heavy as a Sierra 190 MK or the 208 gr A-Max.

For a barrel I plan to go with a quality maker such as Broughton, Bartlein or Hart, etc at 24" in a Sendero/M40-type contour. What do you guys/gals suggest for a twist rate? I have an idea but would like to see your thoughts on the matter.

thanks,
Jason

Re: Twist Rate for a 300 Winchester Magnum Build?

My new one is a 1 in 10 twist. It should be able to handle what you plan for it well.
My second choice would be 1 in 11.25.
The 208 Amax says 1 in 10 on the box but there are those here who say they shoot fine in the 1 in 11.25 twist.

Go 10 twist. It will shoot every bullet you want.

Listen to Rob01 and JasonK, and get the 1-10 for your 300WM.

I have an Obermeyer 1-10 on my 300WM currently, and have another ordered for a new build.

+1,000,000!!

I have 1:10 twists on all my 300WM rifles and shoot everything from 175gr to 220gr bullets with great results.

Re: Twist Rate for a 300 Winchester Magnum Build?

10 twist, but why the short barrel? you would get a lot better MV out of say a 28" or 30" barrel and slower burning powders.... FYI, the 208 AMAX will kill anything you want it to

Re: Twist Rate for a 300 Winchester Magnum Build?

I'm going to hunt with it and have no interest in using a long barrel to clank around. In terms of accuracy, it's a well settled principle that a short barrel is more accurate than a long barrel, all other things being equal. I'll still get good velocities with a 24". Losing 100, or so, fps isn't going to make a difference at usual hunting ranges.

thanks,
Jason

What are you hunting and at what ranges? My woods gun is a 20" barreled .308, the 20" tube is plenty for the caliber and very handy in the brush but I am not hunting moose or elk and I am not taking 600 yard plus shots. My point is that you may be trying to fit the caliber to your intended use but you can choose the caliber that already fits your criteria. 300 WM may be a perfect fit, that is your decision but something else may be a better fit.

Good luck and good hunting

Re: Twist Rate for a 300 Winchester Magnum Build?

I would go with the 10. i have a 300wm with an 11 inch twist and anything heavier than 190 grns has been a never ending struggle. It was a custom rifle built a few years ago and is about to get a new barrel with the 10 inch twist. would have saved me a lot of money if i had done that the first time

Re: Twist Rate for a 300 Winchester Magnum Build?

Guys I'm with you on the 1-10" twist. But, I am buying a Bartlein Barrel M40/M24 contour 1-11.25" twist 5R .299-.308 bore from Robert Whitley off 6mmbr.com. He has a few of these and they will be to your door as soon as he gets the money instead of 8 months to a year from Bartlein. Now the way I see it this twist will be fine for everything I want to do with this rifle. and the heaviest I will shoot is the heaviest it will stablelize. But to be honest I will most likely just shoot the 190smk and something in the 180s for the critters. I am totaly happy with my choice, plus I will have the barrel in a few days and Its a badass contour. Its going on a Remy 700 action and AICS stock. After I burn this barrel I will probley go 1-10" but if everything works out with this twist then I will use it again. Happy Shooting!!

Re: Twist Rate for a 300 Winchester Magnum Build?

USW.260,

Thanks for the heads up. I noted his barrels at 6mmbr.com as you indicate. However, I plan to have the ABS carbon wrap made which means that I'll probably order the barrel directly from Bartlein or Broughton, or Rock Creek, and have them turn the contour to accomodate the carbon wrap for ABS. My research indicates that going through one of those barrel manufacturers allows for the quickest turn around with ABS. Otherwise I wouldn't mind at all using the 11 twist for availabilities sake.
