Dustin Cook, 36 is charged with wounding a 14 and a 13 year old. Hildalgo TX sheriffs department show his (what apears to be) a remmington .308 with a ghile green overmold, bipod and a vortex pst on a 1 piece rail.
Cook who claims to be a competition shooter says he was fully aware the school was in his backstop (approx 1400yrds) when he set up to shoot at a 100 and 300 yard target.
Cook faces a 2nd degree felony.
KNOW YOUR BACKSTOP BEFORE YOU START SHOOTING
(and yes , before you ask he DOES look like a possible mall ninja)

Re: TX Man wounds 2 teens, school was his backstop

I'm curious as to whether these shots were direct fire or ricochets off the ground. From the Youtube video, it appears they set up targets with no berms or backstops of any sort behind them.

Re: TX Man wounds 2 teens, school was his backstop

Bad choice but still crazy.

300 yard dope traveling another 1100 yards?!?!? How many times did that bullet skip?

The video showed trees in the background as well.

Re: TX Man wounds 2 teens, school was his backstop

My theroy was he was shooting uphill at a high target, or prone at a higher pistol target. I conclude this because of the claim of a "competitive" shooter. I figured if he knew to zero at 100 he probably understood dope enough not to Over click WAY UP. I figure hes used to bench rest or range targets higher up (THAT NEED A BERM) and he figured the trees would work. So prone and a high target are my guess.

In the youtube video the first target shown was probably stood upright with the shooter at prone. target looks easily 6 ft tall

1 freak bullet, ricohette maybe? but 2 bullets.

Edit: I didnt even think to google earth an approx elevation. A significant slope, such as the school being in a "valley" might also make sense

he was quoted saying he knew the school was there. But he also did say it was an accident. The guy turned himself in, i'll give him kuddos for that, taking responsibility.

Harris bipod, kept a data book, was shooting with someone else also a "competitive shooter". My guess in the target punch through paper and onward. The data book shows his first shots were high that day...

Thought this when I saw it on AOL over the weekend; I thought about posting it but hesitated because I presume he's on here. It says he's in S. Texas/Hidalgo - fairly close to Rifles Only but I never recall seeing him there, TacPro, Mineral Wells, or Tiger Valley or any rosters/results. Maybe he is F-class? Lets ask Boltripper, he'll know...

My google fu came up with a Dustin Cook, competitive trap shooter in Florida, and a video in June by a Justin Cook and Eddie Ruiz shooting a watermelon with a .338 Lapua (so it could have been even worse)..

When I saw the article I thought of the guy shooting the pistol out of his house...but the video wasn't meant for people like me...
The worse thing about this is two kids are seriously hurt, the second worse thing is the ammo it gives to the anti-Second folks.

edit: There were three shooters, Cook, a second "target shooter" and a third "illegal alien with an assault rifle"...only the bullet that took out a kids kidney is linked to Cook so far, the other bullet is lodged in the spine of the kid who is paralyzed - since doctors don't want to try to take it, looks that one will get un-prosecuted for now...

There is a close possability....

Re: TX Man wounds 2 teens, school was his backstop

So - he violated one of the most basic, fundamental rules of firearms, knowing you target and its backstop. The next question is, what is the appropriate punishment? I know in the context of ranges - we usually know our backstops, as we should on private property. He is facing 20years, for just the one bullet and from the tone of the judge...

Does anyone know the legal outcome of the Quail Creek shooter that came forward after a round from his Vulcan .50 cal hit a woman 3 miles away in an RV of the Texas motor Speedway in 2008? As I recall, that guy was not arrested immediately after he came forward, although there was mention of charges.

Re: TX Man wounds 2 teens, school was his backstop

Due to it being reckless behavior (accident) he faces a second degree felony assualt. Hes lucky so far that its not enhanced or aggrivated due to being done so to a child or on school property. Either way the felony not only gives him years, but bars him from owning or possesing a firearm.

And as another user said it feeds the anti-gun movement. Already zoning laws are being proposed for hunting and shooting whithin the vicinity of the school.
Do I agree with it? : / I firmly believe laws are only needed where stupid people do not follow or comprehend them.

Re: TX Man wounds 2 teens, school was his backstop

yeah he messed up - ignored a very basic rule of shooting
but our words like bullets cant be recalled once loosed-
its done -lets learn from it-
I dont know him & Im in know way defending his actions
but Im sure he's already in a world of hurt right now
Ive made some really stupid mistakes myself
as Im sure some of you have
we are here to learn, & help others to learn

Re: TX Man wounds 2 teens, school was his backstop

There have been many hunter-hunter shootings where the hunter was not charged, and some where the hunter has. What differentiates the too (beside political climate)?
