I've been "getting ready" to shoot in F class for a few months now. (honestly it's been closer to 10 yrs, I've just gotten serious in the last 8 months) Doing load workup, reloading and getting my gear together and just getting some trigger time.
There is a small 1000yd match every Monday afternoon at my club (ORSA) and last weekend I finally got all of the bugs (I've identified so far) worked out in my reloading and load development. Rifle is shooting 1/2 inch or tighter at 100 yds, lots of chrono data and I'm planning to get out to the range and get some longer range dope this week.
Since I finally decided on a load for now and I've got my 100 yd zero set on my knobs I decided to check one last thing today. Travel on my NF 32BR...oops, I need another turn. I have 3 down and 5 up (6moa per turn). Looks like that 20MOA base is not enough. Thanks to SWFA, 2 day shipping, and American Express, I should have a new 30MOA badger in my hands in time to mount and re-zero it this weekend.
I've known since I decided to go with one of the NF BR scopes that they don't have as much travel as the NSXs and that I'd need to have it zeroed at the bottom of the adjustment at 100 yds to get out to 1000, but since I've been doing load development and Zero really wasn't defined yet I hadn't thought about it that much. I think to my credit at least I thought about it before I discovered I couldn't get shots to fly further than 800 yds.
Assuming my calculations are correct and JBM is telling me something close to the truth I should be OK with a 30 MOA base, that'll leave me ~8MOA off the bottom at 100 and about 3 MOA from the top at 1000.
If in reality that doesn't work I'm shooting with an NP-2DD I can always use the lower dot next week, (it gives me another 5+ MOA at 32x) till I can get a 35 or 40 MOA base. I'm sure someone out there makes a 35.
