I have been wanting a compact or ultralight rifle for deer hunting. I have been looking at ruger ultralight in .257 roberts. Does anyone have any experience with this rifle, or any other compacts or ultralights like remmy7,or winnyfeatherlight? Also i was wondering would a .257 roberts lose alot with a 20" barrel?

Re: ultralight or compact rifles for deer hunting!

I have a number of buddies that hunt with Sako FinnLights. They are unbelievably lightweight. Great guns to carry on a trek.

I use the Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 257 Roberts for deer and anteope. I doubt I can find a better rifle for my use.

Light and accurate.

Friends don't let friends buy rugers.

That said I'm a fan of light hunting rifles. I have a Kimber Montana 243 that shoots lights out and weighs under 6.5lbs with scope and sling. It's a pleasure to carry and it's available in 257 Roberts if that's what you want.

The Winchester featherweights are also very nice but I can't talk myself into beating up a nice walnut stock in the woods. The model seven is another good one but I'd try to find a older LS or SS. I've had two newer ones and had problems with both. Remington also has a new SS mountain rifle in a B&C stock that may not be a bad option.

As mentioned the Sako Finnlight is light as is a Tikka T3 Lite but I'm not a fan of detachable mags on hunting rifles especially plastic mags and trigger gaurd like the tikka has.

Unfortunately there's not a whole lot of choices out there for light weight rifles so you just have to make the best choice for what you need. For me it was a Kimber Montana despite the quality control issues they've had. I also have a model 7 I'm happy with but it's blued so I don't use it much.

Not sure if it is a factory set up (offered in that caliber), but what about a Rem 7? I have one in .243 with a 20" barrel that is my favorite carry rifle.

I was in Cabelas in Rapid City, SD last Thursday.
In the used gun rack they had a Remington model 7 Stainless in 7mm-08 with Leupold one piece base and unknown rings for $609.00.
said they'd take $559.00.
That'd be a good one to consider.
