I currently have a bolt gun that I am considering selling but it is SBR’d. It currently has a 16” barrel installed but the 9” barrel I plan on selling as well, likely separate.

According to the ATF’s website, “It is not a requirement to remove your SBR from the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record (NFRTR); however, ATF highly recommends you notify the Government Services Branch (GSB) of the National Firearms Act Division to remove the firearm from the NFRTR registry. All NFRTR updates should be emailed to [email protected]

Based on this, I don’t really HAVE to do anything if I want to sell this SBR’d rifle with a 16” barrel installed? Then just sell the 9” barrel separate?

I have done this twice. I sent a letter requesting removal of a receiver from the registry. Never got a response on the first one that I did a couple of years ago, but I had to contact them for something else and I asked about that one. They told me is was no longer in the registry. The second one I removed was more recent and they actually sent a letter back saying it was removed.

I have done it twice, once on an HK SP5 and once on an LMT lower. They never sent me back anything but I called them to check and neither firearm was still on the registry.
