under what conditions do scope bubble levels fail? and how do they fail?

Well, since they're usually filled with an alcohol mixture to specifically cope with sub-freezing temps; I'm going to say that they would probably fail at just about the same moment as the shooter was entering terminal hypothermia.

200 degrees Fahrenheit? Maybe...

Having worked making construction tools, I've never seen any failure except for impact damage.

I think I've read that sometimes the bubble can split under recoil? I think that would constitute a failure if it does indeed occur.

Huh! Why is that a failure? Just tip the level and join the bubbles back together into one.
