Local Bakersfield man employed with UPS distribution facility plead not contest to stealing 11 firearms. Apparently he removed firearm from container, resealed and shipped container empty to destination. Probably stole alot more.

Glad they caught the bastard, but I find it hard to believe he was acting alone.

Re: UPS Employee Pleads to Stealing Firearms

I Googled "ups gun thefts" looking for a news story on the Bakersfield thefts.
It's not an isolated incident, it's a frigging epidemic!

I think some were recovered.

As an aside, I sold a Benelli M1 Super 90 to Tactical Mike last year. Gun was stolen by someone at local UPS. Reported to local PD and desk jockey told me that it was an insurance issue with UPS. After I put my fire out, I called the police chief and got things squared away. Insurance issue my ass!

Re: UPS Employee Pleads to Stealing Firearms

When I was contacted to have my 1911 shipped back from the finisher, he told me that the reason you have to overnight pistols via UPS or FedEx was due to the high amount of guns being stolen by employees. What a shame.

Re: UPS Employee Pleads to Stealing Firearms

thats why i never ship guns i have had them ship to me from euro optics if they dont show up let them take care of it but there is no way i will ship i would rather drive 6 hours but driving is bad for me gets me out of the house. what a shame

Re: UPS Employee Pleads to Stealing Firearms

I worked for UPS while in college in early 70's at large hub in mid Michigan. Hundred plus part time employees tons of stuff coming in everyday and every month somebody gone due to theft. Worked part and full time later in mid 70,s in Detroit and again theft was very common, loaders, sorters, drivers etc. Some of the stuff stolen was strange, hair gels, empty pill casings, electronics, magazines, and of course guns..
You don't see much about even out and out truck robberies in the papers as UPS and FEDEX don't want us knowing that your parcel could be stolen or not making it to destination.

Same here.. I insure for the most expensive I can find said item. I generally have around 1/2 into it.

Re: UPS Employee Pleads to Stealing Firearms

They charge as much to ship as they can get, but if you want to take the chance OUR employees won't steal it then please allow us to give it to you up the ass again for 'insurance'. Then if we lose it you will need to show proof that what you shipped is actually worth what we Deliveranced you for on insurance. Oh, and don't get in a F**kin hurry about us paying you either, that is because we need to decide if you packaged it properly and what you say was in the package actually was and value you insured it for wasn't because you were hoping we'd lose it!!!!!

Thank You for shipping UPS, FedEx or the Civil Servant minded USPS. Where you're getting screwed eventually is our foremost goal!!

Re: UPS Employee Pleads to Stealing Firearms

What disgusts me about the insurance is that I am paying them to replace my item if THEIR employee steals it. The rate is about 1.25 pre 100.00 of value, if that is the case their loss or theft rate must be about 1%. With what they charge, they ought to have video and their own securuty policing this, why do I have to pay extra(insurance)to expect that they will deliver as described without one of their employees stealing it. I am including UPS USPS and Fed EX. I am sure filing and collecting is not as easy as you would think-they are not always going to buy the "2 carat diamond" story. They will want proof of contents and proof of value etc....

Your may be thowing your money away. If your selling an item, UPS insurance is only going to cover the actual sales price absent special circumstances. When I sold Tactical Mike my Benelli, I threw in a couple of extra chokes to be a nice guy. Well, UPS did not want to pay me for being a nice guy, only the sales price.

Re: UPS Employee Pleads to Stealing Firearms

I bought an M40 rifle from DD Ross several years ago and he tracked it to the UPS hub in KY. It stayed there for 2 days, Then Dan called a friend that works for UPS, Long story short it was found in the back of a workers truck... He was arrested and my rifle arrived the next day. I always take a picture with the time and date showing so if it comes up missing I have some proof.
I filed a claim with UPS on an item that was stolen then ending up at the store empty, Well that Bitch from UPS accused me of sending an empty box then trying to collect the ins. money !!! I got my $ but it took awhile.

They have to pay to replace it. Up to the insured value. You have to prove the value of the item. That being said, does not mean they won't try to low-ball you, as it's in their financial best interest, if you don't dispute it. Just show them the price of replacement, which is usually a web page shot away, then begins the waiting game and a few calls to/from their account specialists. 30-60 days later you get your money. It's not fast. I've had to make 2 claims, and this is how it has worked for me. They don't know how much you've sold it for, nor is it their business. Their business is to replace what you've insured to you. your business is to make it right by the buyer.
