Re: UPS lost my 77/17 barrel
I went through the UPS claims service for a stock that had been damaged while in their possession. It took about a month to get the claim filed and straightened out (my experience is that their online claim process is meant to discourage & not work). They then they sent an "inspector" out to look at, document in writing and photograph the the stock and the packaging. The "inspector" was a guy that chased claims for UPS part time. He said plenty about UPS's standard procedures regarding the claims process - which I wrote down and followed. Ultimately, UPS did cut a check for the replacement - over $600.00.
Here is what I learned:
**Only the shipper can file a claim - the recipient cannot initiate it and ultimately, all correspondence regarding the claim and any/all restitution, if awarded, will go to the shipper in their name. This is important to note if you are purchasing a gun via Guns America or Gunbroker - make sure your Seller isn't a shyster, is actually insuring the shipment and is someone that you feel good about working with in case the SHTF. (**this part doesn't really apply to the OP or this thread)
Keep everything - receipts, packaging, damaged product....everything because they are going to ask for it. In the event that something is missing, the receipt will have the shipping weight which will prove something is missing.
Purchase insurance/put an accurate declared value. If you don't take the precautions & pay for them up front, you're shit outta luck.
Follow up. File the claim online AND call them. They're going to drag their heels every step of the way. You have to do all the work, so know that up front and then do it.
Stay calm - nobody is inclined to help an asshole, so don't be one. Act efficiently and professionally and your result will likely reflect your efforts.
