URSA 3000 Yard Challenge (2020) Announcement – We area GO!!!
For lack of any sign-ups for the 3K, and for the last three published NorCal events, and based on discussions with affected parties (Lynn and shooters that have shot prior 3Ks), we have decided to move the 3K out one month, to May 17th. We are also changing the CoF into a one-day event, conducting it basically as a somewhat-modified, monthly SoCal event, all of which are open-ended to an unlimited distance.
*******************
If you want to possibly shoot the 3K, please read all the way to the bottom of this announcement and then register - online registration is required! Registration closes at 6 PM, Pacific, on Wednesday, May13, 2020.
Date: Sunday, May 17 2020
Place: URSA SoCal venue (where we normally shoot - Barstow, CA area)
Objective: Provide an opportunity for the shooters who qualify (see below) to competitively engage steel at approximately 3135 yards (and possibly further) and win a small remembrance of the accomplishment.
Qualification: As for a regular, i.e., non-3K, URSA event (see CoF, below)
Set-up and Start Shooting: We will setup the range at 2080 and 2630 yards (mostly in the dark) the same day and start shooting as close as possible to sunrise.
Course of Fire/CoF:
Seven (7) rounds “practice” for each shooter, then
Three (3) more rounds “practice” followed immediately by 10 rounds (for each shooter) to “qualify” to shoot record round at 2080.
Those shooters that get at least 3 in 10 during the 7+3 “practice”, or the 10-shot “qualification”, qualify to shoot for record at 2080.
Qualified shooters then shoot 10 shots for record at 2080.
Shooters that shoot at least 4 in 10 during the 2080 record round or earlier (minimum two shooters required) will then shoot at 2630, where they will get three (3) “practice” shots at that distance and then, immediately, shoot 10 rounds for record.
Advancement beyond 2630 will be based on at least two shooters scoring at least 4 in 10 during the prior 10-round record round; they will then do the same 3-then-10 drill until there is a winner or a tie of at least two shooters. Tied shooters will then immediately go into Sudden Death (as required to decide Winner and/or possibly Runner-Up).
NOTES:
a. IF the shooter does not want to shoot the allowed 7 shots (or 3 shots) during any “practice”, the shooter MUST notify the Match Director/MD of that BEFORE taking their first “practice” shot at that distance, and the MD must confirm back to the shooter that “shooter is shooting X practice shots.”
b. The shooter does NOT have to shoot all 10 record shots (e.g., they want to conserve ammo for a possible Sudden Death). IF that is the case, the shooter MUST notify the MD that they are through shooting at that distance, and the MD must confirm back to the shooter that “shooter has stopped shooting at (distance), unload and show clear (remove your bolt).”
c. Normal URSA event scenario - we will only be shooting record round at 2080 IF two or more shooters score at least 3 in 10 to qualify for the 2080 record round. Similarly, we will only be shooting record round at 2630 (and, if applicable, beyond) IF two or more shooters shoot at least 4 in 10 at the next-shorter distance (i.e., at 2080 for 2630, at 2630 for 3135, etc.). In fact, to be totally clear, NO one is guaranteed to shoot for record at all, i.e., if at least two shooters do not qualify to shoot at 2080, there will be no record round shot, no match. Additionally, based on prior 3Ks, there is quite a significant chance that no one will shoot at 3135 – we will not even set up a target at 3135 until we have at least two shooters qualified to shoot at 3135, i.e. having shot at least 4 in 10 at 2630.
d. IF we have two or more shooters who score at least 4 in 10 at 3135, we will set a target at approx 3613 yards and shoot that distance – continuing to move out in distance until we fail to have at least two shooters scoring at least 4 in 10 at each distance. [Each new distance is approximately 500 yards further down range from the last.]
e. Final distance “ties” will be settled by way of Sudden Death. If there is a tie for Winner, there will be a Sudden Death and the loser will be Runner-Up. If there is a Winner and a tie for Runner-Up, there will be a Sudden Death to decide Runner-Up. “Sudden Death” is described as one shooter shoots and then the next until there is an un-matched hit. The shooter without a hit drops out until only one remains. Running out of ammo equates to a miss.
f. Shooters are allowed one (1) spotter. Because of the limited parking, it is assumed that the spotter will travel to the event with the shooter. Spotters, of course, can also be shooters.
g. The ONLY non-shooter/non-spotter persons to be accommodated at the 3K MUST be traveling with the shooter - again because of limited parking. And, PLEASE, no persons under 18 unless there is a non-shooter/non-spotter person to "watch" that individual continuously while the range is both hot and cold (and also traveling with the shooter). ALL attendees MUST sign the liability form. [Forms are actually signed and dated at the event.]
h. Shooters will be limited to one (1) rifle, no multi-rifle quals. [This maximizes shooting during the better weather conditions in the early AM.]
i. "Unlimited" - unless otherwise noted, system shall only be limited to the extent that all hardware and the fired ammunition/bullet may be legally owned and discharged at the location where the activity/event is conducted. There shall be no limitation on the caliber (other than max .50 cal in California), type of bullet (other than no AP on steel and no incendiary), type of firing system, or physical restraints within which the system is implemented. The intent being to provide - as much as legally and practically possible - an opportunity to safely demonstrate and enjoy the innovation and expertise of the shooters and builders/experimenters interested in this shooting discipline.
► Amplification of "unlimited": the following are acceptable - return-to-battery mechanisms, single-piece/connected-front-and-rear rests, rail guns, extremely small and extremely large caliber bullets (including sabots), guided munitions, and basically anything that is "locally legal". Shooting may be from the ground, a bench, or a platform of the shooter's choice (from which distance to target can be reliably determined).
Remembrance of This Event:
Everyone that qualifies for the 2080 record round by shooting at least 4 in 10 during “practice” or “qual for 2080”, will receive an “official” URSA event t-shirt. These t-shirts will include the URSA logo and one of the following “messages”:
“I qualified for and shot the URSA 3000 Yard Challenge, May 17, 2020” (black logo and text on white)
“I was Runner-Up at the URSA 3000 Yard Challenge, May 17, 2020” (black logo and text on silver/gray)
“I Won the URSA 3000 Yard Challenge, May 17, 2020” (white text on bright orange – closest available to “gold”)
T-shirt size and “ship to” info will be recorded at the event and the t-shirts shipped accordingly.
There will be no “I was there” or other t-shirts provided or offered.
Admin and Admonition:
"Registered" shooters will receive a detailed info sheet (details of where we shoot, how to get there, etc.) by e-mail on Wednesday, May 13th, evening.
Those unfamiliar with URSA are referred to www.unlimitedrange.org, in particular, to https://www.unlimitedrange.org/operations.html and FAQ 13, the normal, monthly, course of fire.
ALL wanting to shoot the 3K need to "register" using the link to the online form ("Online Liability Release and Build Sheet (form) for shooter") at the top of https://www.unlimitedrange.org/activity event schedule.html
For this event to proceed, at least six (6) shooters MUST be signed up before registration ends, 6 PM, Pacific, on Wednesday, May 13, 2020.
ALL other attendees (i.e., those allowed as noted above), need to "register" using the online form "Online Liability Release (form) for non-shooters", same page. In the "Status" field please identify whether you are a spotter or "other", in either case please identify which shooter you are traveling with. Thanks. Again, registration closes at 6 PM, Pacific, on Wednesday, May 13, 2020.
If you've been looking for an incentive to shoot with us, this might be it. Hope you’ll give it a try.
