Two of my team mates have the USO Field Spotting Scopes, one with an ARD and one without. I’ve used them both but haven’t compared them back to back. When I get the chance I’ll try and make the comparison and post it up here. You have a good point and I didn’t even think to compare the two. When were out shooting we usually having one or the other.
I haven’t had many issues with the eye relief of the Field Spotter, I like the fact that it’s a generous eye relief and I don’t have to shove my eye up agents it to use it, especially at higher magnifications. When I’m spotting I’m usually sitting on the ground or standing with spotter mounted to a tri pod and can quickly get a clear sight picture.
During the AZ LRPRS match in Phoenix, Arizona I was able to spot the holes in paper at 300 yards (.264”) on the cold bore target (white target). I noticed when I moved to the dark color portion of the target it was harder to see the .264” holes and could see some of them but not all of them. By that time it was getting hot out there and mirage was increasing. In retrospect it could be related to chromatic aberration but I figured it was the mirage.
I have had a similar experience to yours in regards to the ARD with my rifles scope. When I first got it and headed out to zero it I was comparing it to my Nightforce NXS 3.5x15x50mm. I was surprised the USO was actually brighter and a bit clearer. The NF is SFP and has a larger objective 50mm vs. 44mm. I was pretty surprised considering the USO is FFP has a 44mm objective and has an ARD in the sun shade.

I like it! It’s sturdy and not too heavy. The carrying case is really handy too. I breifly mentioned it in the review but I really like the screw on aluminum lens covers.
