Looking for into on the USMC 40X barreled receivers currently at the CMP stores. For those who obtained one, are they all 700 style receivers, 722 style receivers or is there a mix of both? I'd like to order one but I'm partial to the 700 style receivers. I've not ordered from the CMP before (currently don't qualify to unfortunately, gotta fix that) and I don't want to roll the dice when ordering. Will they let you specify which style if you order one?

TIA

Re: USMC 40X barreled receivers

They were made from 56 to 58 for USMC IIRC. The 40-XB/700 style didn't come into being until 63/64ish, depending on who you talk to and what you read.

The one I got looks to have a good bore but alot of nicks on barrel exterior, some actually fairly deep. Don't know how in the hell you can nick/gouge steel like that accidentally but I have proof that someone knows how.lol

Bolt release is the same for the 2 but the 722 based guns take a different spring. Trigger assembly fits but the 700 safety lever doesn't clear the tang of the older 40-X recievers. Some have bent the lever to clear or use a bottom safety if you want a safety. I removed material from rear tang of my other standard 40-X reciever just like a 700/40-XB is done. The PTG bolts have a straight handle but think I read somewhere they were going to make some capatible for 700 inlet stocks????

Really figuring the pissing around and costs it is cheaper to find a complete rifle. The PTG bolts are made .010 long so they can be hand fit because of varying tolerances. Considering it may cost a Franklin or more to send it off and have headspace fit etc the complete rifle route is a no brainer, but I don't have much upstairs to work with anyway.

HTH

Dennis

SDW prety muched summed it up. I was also planning on removing some material on the tang so a normal safety will work. I will also thread the barrel. Since I just got the barreled action, I really am sacrificing the collectibility (wd?) since I did not get a complete rifle, and have no desire to collect all the parts. I just threw it in a 700 stock, and it fit fine...after I broke the safety of a newer trigger trying to bend it around the tang. Dumb Dumb Dumb...

Only thing I want to add is the one I got is a darn good shooter. At 100yds, had 3 shots touching until my next two opened it up to 3/4" group.

DT

Anything you get from the CMP is a bit of a roll of the dice. You can check with the CMP North store at Camp Perry and see if they have barreled receivers in the store. If so you can drive over and handpick one. Might not be great but you would be able to see what you are getting.
