I purchased a very clean USMC 40X this weekend. Great bore and about all the finish. It has a few small dings in the barrel, but bore is about new and stock is great. It appears near unfired.

I cleaned the bore, adjusted the trigger and did an overall clean up last night. Mounted a Unertl. Placed a sling and hand stop and adjusted.

It is the light weight model, is that the more common configuration? Appears to be a 721 Action. Is there a way to check headspace without a guage?
    Can't wait to shoot it.

    Re: USMC 40X

    rth,

USMC contract rifles are med heavy barrel configs to the best of my knowledge, not the straight taper heavy barrels.

If the bolt # is matched to the receiver, I have never checked the headspace myself on any of mine, just as long as you have a good bolt lock down, action cycles smooth and all else is in good visual order. I just go out and shoot after the nornal "I just got it" clean up like you just did.

Best of luck and enjoyment with the purchase.

BTW, I cant get enough of the Unertl's myself. Just love them.
What power you put on her?

    DS,
I put a 12X on but now looking at the CH, they appear a bit corse. I think I will go with a 24x to wring out then if I decide to hunt with it, I will go back to a 6x.
    Thank you for the information.

    Re: USMC 40X

What you have is a 40X standard barrel. As far as I know, all USMC 40X's are standard barrels. The USMC is based on the 722 Remington action. The CMP sold two models of 40X. The 722 based 40X and the 700 Based 40XB. The B is found at the end of the serial number on the 700 based rifles. The USMC orders were pre 40XB rifles. Add to that, most if not all 40X/722 rifles sold to the millitary were standard barrels. I have heard of a few standard barrel 40XB/700 rifles. I don't think Remington offered any other barrels but the standard and heavey. The actions are a bit different in the tang and where the safety lever is located. They also have different triggers.
    the 40X uses this trigger:

    The 40XB uses this one

The actions look like this (note that mine have 40X bolts which will work in either rifle)

    Re: USMC 40X

I have a few CMP 22lr rifles. 1 40x and 2 40xb's one of the xb's was a barreled action from the CMP. I have a PT&G bolt for it and an adjustable comb stock. Still need some action parts to finish it. I als have 2 52C Winchester CMP rifles and a 52D CMP rifle. Again, one 52C is a barreled action rifle. It is almost done, need to get an adjustable butt plate for the stock that I have for it. Other CMP rifles ar 3 513T rifles and a Mossberg 44US. That is just a few of the trainers I have. There are several others from Germany, Poland and England. Been collecting for many years.
