USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

There are probably a lot of stories similar to this one. This is exactly why you do not put your finger on the trigger till you know what your target is and what is beyond it.

Sucks.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

Since the woods are full of idiots, I'm a firm believer in Hunter Orange when in the field during hunting season.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

That's being ruled an accident? That's BS.

I hope the guy gets the maximum punishment allowable by law. He should know better to not fire his weapon at something without identifying his target. Make a fucking example out of him.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

This shit happens every single year. Not blaming the the guy but you've simply got to wear blaze when your out in the woods during hunting season, just too many trigger happy morons out there.

I'll blame him. He made a conscience decision to pull the trigger. He needs to be held accountable and take responsibility for his actions.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

I think he was refering to the guy that got shot for not wearing the orange. Obviously it wasn't his fault for being shot, but he COULD have worn the orange and perhaps prevented the incident.

Fuck that. I shouldn't have to dress up like a goddamn road construction sign in order not to be shot by some dickhole who can't follow the basic rules of firearms. The marine was hiking, not hunting according to the story.

Given that news stories rarely provide all the facts, I'll withhold final judgement but if this story is as reported, that hunter should be punished. Severely.

I agree wholeheartedly. This guy should have his right to own a firearm revoked and do time. What did he just teach his grandson after all? I'm a shooter before I'm a hunter, In fact, I despise most hunters and have no desire to be called one. Many hunters are lazy and ignorant. Hunters ruined my elk season this year by driving their 4 wheelers all over the no motor vehicle area I hunt. I hike and we have packs with horses to get our animals out. There wasn't a trail or meadow up there that didn't have truck or atv tracks running through it. It infuriates me.

The last day I was up there this year I came across a four wheeler at the top of a meadow that I'd just hiked up to. I hope it's still there in the spring. I only did 5 dollars worth of damage but left that asshole with 4 flat tires(I just cut his valve stems). Fuck him. I'll be fucked if I'm going to abide by the law and hike up into this beautiful country, only to find some fuckstick has ridden his 4 wheeler in there already. Ignorance is no excuse. I was tempted to do more damage but that dumb fuck had enough to deal with after I left. I did mark the spot with my GPS and turn him into the forest service on the way home.

I DESPISE HUNTERS

no kidding, you know that hike we took last w/e up on the S.Fork? Ali and I were up above her ranch when we heard a whole volley of high powered shots from the next draw. 6 total in about 10 seconds.. at elk? seriously? Dude took a shot and got them all running, spray and pray after the first shot...

I agree with that to a point, but I'm a realist. There are idiots out there, we all know this wasn't the only one.

I dress accordingly. Heck I'm not hunting people, I have no reason to camo up to take a hike, but I'd like to attend a few more of my Granddaughter's vollyball & basketball games. If I have to wear hunter orange to do that, so be it.

I do as well, as in when we were out picking mushrooms.

But the woods are still full of idiots and I've had people glass me while wearing the orange...

People are idiots.

This exact situation happened up here last year, an illegal immigrant was shot while picking brush.
Don't like Illegal immigrants but don't wish that on them either.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

Teggy-

You must be one of those Idiots Out Wondering Around(IOWA) on your four wheeler where you shouldn't be. You're a real hunter there chief.

I talked to a couple of the people I saw up there and they knew they weren't supposed to be in there with their ATVs. The only exception is physically handicapped people, they're allowed to hunt from a four wheeler. Everyone else who hunts from the road or from a four wheeler is a fuckstick.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

Every year people get shot during hunting season out here. In fact it is kinda of a Sick joke - know where the guy you dislike is going to be hunting and accidentally shoot them.

Personally, I just stay out of the woods during general rifle season. Way too many folks that are dumb with a fire arm concentrated in one area.

Good luck

Well stated and my sentiments exactly. I shouldn't "HAVE TO" wear blaze orange but if I'm in an area where hunters are known to be, you can bet I certainly WILL BE wearing it to protect my own life.

Let's be clear here. I'm not knocking the practice of wearing blaze orange but it damn sure isn't a: "they're both at fault" scenario. That's what got my balls twisted.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

My long range shooting area is in a popular area for hunting. I had to walk down to check my target. During hunting season I wear a "road construction" vest. I know I shouldn't have to. But who's gonna loose if I get shot?

The hunter?

Maybe he has poor eye sight like a 67 year old.

Live in reality or your own fantasy world.......

I don't own a 4 Wheeler, how ever I'm old, lazy and have a bit of copd. I like to hunt and to do it in the mountains, I have to adapt.

I use horses. I have property that allows me to keep horses and in good enough shape to tend to them.

But not everyone is in my catagory. There are many hunters, do to age or other dabilities that can't hunt on foot. Nor can they keep horses.

I have no problem with using 4 Wheelers in the mountains. Why should they be prevented from enjoying a sport.

Are we that selfish?

If I run across someone valdalizing some one's means of transportation, things are going to get real western, real quick.

You take someone who is old and/or diabled and destroy there means of movement you can kill them.

That's no different then killing someone with the careless use of firearms. Actually, its worse, its delibert.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

kraig-

I respect your age, experience and the fact that you use horses to hunt the mountains. I live in and love WY. Just don't ride a 4 wheeler where it isn't permitted. It was worse this year than it's ever been. If you are old/disabled find an area where hunting from a four wheeler is allowed. Don't ruin pristine wilderness landscape by putting anything other than footprints on it. What is wrong with that? If you deliberately disregard laws because you are lazy, I have no respect for you. That guy is lucky I did nothing more than I did. 5 bucks worth of valve stems. Tell me I'm wrong.

I go to the places I hunt because I'm capable and strong enough to pack an animal out of the area. Don't take your 4 wheeler in there.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

It is a tragedy.
Personally I wouldn't wear brown or black clothing in the woods during bear or dear season, when the gun shooters aee out there, but that isn't a requirement. Here in Pa it is suggested to do that, and I would and do when not actually hunting. in fact, unless i am helping a friend haul out a animal or stand i avoid the woods when I'm not hunting, for my own safety and to not disturb somebody else's hunt.

ATV's are allowed just about nowhere here. Unless your a farmer (I am not), it is illegal to ride them any where, even in the road ditches, let alone public land. I don't know anyone who would trailer an ATV around here to hunt the 160-200 acre public land areas around here. Your statements are unfounded and ignorant. Like I said, get a clue.

Exactly. If a person is going to shoot at a target before identifying it, they shouldn't be operating a firearm.

It's a shame that this world is full of idiots.

I think it was the same guy that had a decoy up a couple days earlier that I watched from about 400yds away. I watched him come and take it down and I thought to myself, "who in the F drags a decoy all the way up here????" An a-hole on a 4 wheeler, that's who. Like I said before, FUCK him. I doubt some fat shit, four wheeler riding douche is going to be beating my ass either. BTW, all this guy had on for orange was a hat.

From now on, I will willfully deflate any a-hole's tires that willfully rides his four wheeler through wilderness area that I happen to be hunting. I'll simply be returning the air to its home; not destroying property.

I agree with you, but that doesn't mean the hunter was not 100% at fault. He failed to identify his target, fired his gun and ended up taking a human life. The book should be thrown at him.

Guns are designed to destroy things. I am sure the hunter is well aware of this fact. The hunter was negligent not the hiker assuming there are no laws in place requiring everyone, hikers and hunters, to wear orange while on public hunting land during hunting season.

Don't get me wrong. Check your ass at all times. The world is full of idiots. In the end 100% of the liability falls on the hunter for not identifying his target. I'm not a lawyer. That's just my opinion.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

What a tragedy. The that also means that the hunter involved is willing to take blind potshots at animals. What a classy guy.As hunters its our duty to make sure we take clean, humane shots. Never mind that it also keeps the rest of us safe in the woods.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

I have heard stories about farmers who painted "Cow" in flourescent paint on their livestock, after having some of them shot during hunting season, and guys with horses who put flouresent orange horse blankets over them that time of year.
We had a kid shot in the head while up in a apple tree about a decade ago. A guy was hunting Groudhogs, and thought he saw one that climbed up a tree.
Turkey hunters, in full camo and calling, sometimes called each other in and shot each other too.
Considering the number of hunters here in Pa we have few firearms accident s and they sure make the news. Usually it's guys who have a stroke or heart attack and drop dead, and occasionally somebody who fall out of a tree (no belt or harness)and busts his head or hangs himself on his safety belt.
accidental shootings are infrequent. We did have a crazy guy shoot a hunter last year or two ago, and he got shot himself. But he was nuts and confrontational, and carrying a AK. He specifically was looking for trouble, and found it. he had a history.

Kraig, how did you get that deer to stand still enough to put orange tape on it and why is there a black bear with an orange hat riding on it's back?

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

That's a horrible tragedy for all involved...That poor grandkid is scarred for life, the grandfather probably will and should go to jail, or be punished and a family is without a son.

I'll tell you one thing, last year I hunted in KY with a rifle. It was the first and probably the last year I will make the trip to hunt in a wooded area with a rifle. Out west where it is very open I can see an advantage to hunting with a rifle, but in the woods there's no point. I hiked up a steep foothill and perched on top of a fallen tree. Two does came down the hill and stopped towards the bottom. The hill was at least a 45* angle and I was a good 125-150 yards up. I shot and killed the large one and then all hell broke loose as the other doe ran. A hunter who I passed on the way in, who had also had major problems with his autoloading remington rifle chambered in 30-06, fired a volley off at the running doe. In the morning when I passed him and three "buddies" couldn't even get it loaded. When he fired off his volley he shot uphill and towards the only road coming into the public hunting area, probably 350-400 yards away. The doe was approx. 200 yards from him when it ran down the hill. I asked him how far he thought it was and he estimated 400 yards. It was scary to say the least.

I actually want all you wankers wearing orange when I don't. That way I can see you coming from a mile off and get the hell outta there!

I wear orange but have never had a problem with other hunters on public land. I go to WMA's were ATV's aren't allowed and make it a habit to hike further than 99% of the hunters out here. After the first mile you leave 95% of tards. Another mile you might run into one other person. On a place that's 7,000 acres I can disappear from people pretty quick. I carry a topographic map of the area and know most of the trails that don't show up on a satellite photo.

Not to mention I hunt with an Ar15 often. Realistically you don’t want to piss the guy off that can send 30 rounds back at you.

Funny.. (well not really)

we were in Corbett for some training this past weekend and that's a hunting ground. I was telling the guys to look out for hunters and not get shot.

Re: USMC Reserve shot, hunter thought he was a bear

Simple test......

Ask anyone to guestimate a distance. See what they say.

Friend asked a guy at the club how far he thought it was to the end of the range. Guy guessed 450 yards. Keeping in mind that right over his head it said 200 meters.....

Heard a story..... New guy buying a hunting rifle. Just got his first hunting licence. Was asking what an elk looked like.

There are all kinds out there. Do what you have to, to make sure you go home to your family.

And if you watch a little bit longer, you can see my orange ass going home to my real past time, chasing my Granddaughtes Vollyball & Basketball team all over the state.

Not for nothing dude but while I agree with your overall stance on keeping the wilderness wild and not tearing it up with ATVs, you're taking it to a whole new level. Willful destruction of property? Seems to me that you're the lucky one in that the owner didn't catch you in the act and beat your ass.

I didn't let emotion get the best of me and do any real damage to the ATV. That didn't and doesn't make sense to me. The people who know me here will tell you that I'm a pretty level headed guy. I simply immobilized it in a less costly way. I doubt that asshole will be back in there next year. I thought WY only required a hat. From now on, I will willfully deflate any a-hole's tires that willfully rides his four wheeler through wilderness area that I happen to be hunting. I'll simply be returning the air to its home; not destroying property.

So it's ok to destroy his property because he has violated a law? You're now judge and jury. Dude, you should probably think about this. He MAY be an asshole for his actions, but he MIGHT be able to press charges against you for your actions. You might wanna consider letting WFG handle it. Just sayin..... Apologies to the OP. Bad on the shooter. Should be prosecuted. No excuse, IMO.
Weaselthis out.
