Well,I "accidentally" won a bid on an older Winchester Coyote in .223, with the non thumbhole laminated stock.

While discussing a scope for it with a co-worker, he offered me a Vari-XIII 8.5-25X AO scope with target turrets in PRI steel rings & sunshade. It came on a 22-250 he bought for his kid, as far he knows the gun wasn't even zero'd with the scope. He's asking $500 for all of it.

Since I paid $600 for the rifle, I wanted to stay in the $400 range on the scope, but can go higher. Other scopes I was looking at were the Weaver classic V16 or V24, Sightron SII, and Vortex Viper PA, perhaps the Viper HS on closeout at SWFA?

The rifle will realistically spend most of it's time at the 100yd range shooting groups, I may have some access to ranges out to 5 & 600yds. I would like to be able to use it hunting coyotes or chucks, but I honestly don't see that happening. My original intent was to be at 16-20X at the top end.
If this is good deal on the variX I could go that way, and trade it if I'm not happy with it.

I don't think I'm sophisticated enough to tell the difference in glass, but how would the VariXIII compare to newer scopes in the $4-500 price range?

FWIW, he's in no hurry to sell & I'm in no hurry to buy..other then some OCD of me not being able to stand having an incomplete gun around.

Thanks,
Bob

A nikon buckmasters for 200 bucks would be just fine that is what's on my varmint AR. The leupold would be a decent choice too but I would want to get it for less from a 'good buddy'. It's possible he paid that much or more for it though, even if he got it used. Probably 300-400 on ebay.

buy the vari-XIII and sell it for $600 then buy a SWFA fixed power for $300 and some good rings and you'l be very happy with it and below your budget and a few bucks left in you pocket
cheers.
