Ok, so I have been out about 9 times so far this year and have had 0 luck! Last year was the same. I am in great areas on 3 different farms. I have researched extensively calling techniques and there are so many opinions and different perspectives on the topic. So one of my questions is what is working for you guys? My current setup is a johnny stewart caller with a 50 ft cord. I personally don't think it is loud enough and the different calls are to routine! I am currently looking to upgrade! On to my next question. I have the FoxPro spitfire in mind. Anyone use it and how are they? I can't afford to drop 350+ on a call right now. Would one of those be a upgrade for me? I also want to add a mojo critter. I have tried morning, afternoon, evening, and night hunts. I think the spitfire and the mojo critter would be a nice combo for hunts during the daylight hours. I went out once this morning and also did a night hunt today. It is just discouraging not having any action time and time again. I usually use distressed rabbit and throw in some yote sounds every now and then. Have also tried a fawn in distress a few times. I would consider myself a experienced deer hunter so I have applied the same techniques as far as scent control. I am positive it is due to my lack of effective calling. Any tips and advice would be appreciated!!! Thanks

I kinda went through the same thing you are describing, but with mouth calls. I am wayyyy too cheap to spend that kinda cash on a call, so I have just learned to make the mouth calls work. One thing i noticed was that i didn't call enough, I needed to make more noise. What I thought was too much was just right, and if they weren't comming after 10 or so minutes, they weren't comming at all. after stepping up the calling they started comming in alot more. I would love to have a mojo critter too, to help focus their attention.

What kind of mouth calls are you having luck with? I could see that working for me if I had the mojo critter out there to help draw the attention off of me once they committed to come in.

If you can hunt at night, use a red lense on about a 250,000 cpl light and leave it on the whole time scanning in a full cicle around you. You would be suprised how fast some come in and find out something is not kosher.

The Johnny Stweart call is a very good call. I'm not trying to discourage you. But everyone and their Grandmother are trying to call Coyotes now. They hear almost every sound known to man as people try to call them in 365 days a year.
Now with that being said how big are the areas you are calling in. If you are making more than one call on a few hundred acres that is way to much calling in a small space. Remember a Coyote can hear a mouse squeek under a foot of snow from 200ft away so I believe you have plenty of sound.
As far as your caller goes I have a JS Caller that takes 12 D size battery's. It's 30 years old and I am thinking of going back to that because everyone uses the Foxpro and the animals have heard those sounds since birth.

I have pretty good luck with coyotes for the most part & I use mostly electronic calls & mostly hunt @ night . But Sometimes you will run into some or a group that are flatass tough to get them to play your game . So you have to play there game instead of yours . & ( In Reality ) I only get coyotes to play my game about 2-3 times for 10-Sits . You will get a dry patch once in a while but don't get frustrated .
I got a prime example that I am having right @ this moment . I have one group of ( @ least 6+ ) Coyotes that are giving me the runaround . I ran into them about last fall that stay locked-up in a huge plot of timber that is there main home that is 20 acre of Timber that is surrounded by thousands of acre's of agriculture land . I did down one of them early spring and then saw a couple slinking threw the shadows and out of range twice on a couple sits @ night . But getting them to come out and play with me is really pissing me off now & mainly because, I know that ' They Know ' that a human is stalking them & that they are educated . Also, I will not shoot unless I have the shot as to Not Dirty the area I am working .
Three nights ago I worked 6-hours on them and did a few calls but I did NOT want to over-do it on the calls So I did a shitload of observing and spotting . I heard the pack light-up and group scream twice in about 4 hours . Also got a couple individual ones to chatter . I even went out & around to another plot of flat Agriculture acreage about 1/4+ mile away in some Hay Bails in the opposite direction that I started in and did a few calls but only heard them and they would Not come & get there Medicine . Was Not very fulfilling to me as I am 3-zip on my last three sits & way overdue for some gratification with this bunch .
Only thing left for me to do now is change my game-plan . ( I am thinking ) that I will go to some Geese ( decoys and E-calls ) as it is nearing Fall weather and the Geese are on starting on the move . In my area of Ag-land, Geese will stop, rest and graze and chatter in huge groups @ night-time . So that is my plan for the next go-round with them .
I am pretty positive I WILL get another one in that group pretty quick but it is going to be a vicious circle as they are just going to get more educated the more they get killed . Most likely after the next bullet I give them I will let them go till this Winter and let them get hungrier and relaxed on me pressuring them .

I'm no expert, but I try to shoot a handful of yotes before deer season with my deer rifle for practice etc. I have always used a mouth call but this year I was finally able to get a Foxpro.
Anyway I have always had good luck with a Johnny Stewart mouth call that. It is the model that you can bite down on to vary the pitch and sounds. Like other suggested, I start off loud and fast for about 5 mins or so and then slow down as if on its last breath. Also make sure to have good visibility for at least 100 yds and position yourself down wind. My fav setup is about half to 3/4 up a small hill.
Early morn or late eves are usually productive assuming the yotes are in your area.

I use a Ruffy Dog mouth call. Call my tail off...start out low and get loud in case someting is close. I stay for 45 minutes and if nothing, move several hundred yards and do it again. I use an old arrow stuck in the ground with some chicken feathers from the yard tied dangling from it with fishing line that will move and flutter in the lightest breeze...set about 50 yards in front of me. I prefer to have at least 100 yards of view but many times I have less because of the thick woods where I am. It makes for some "oh crap" moments with coyotes rolling in on top of me.

Anyone take more than one gun with them? I like to have my 308 but I usually take my 22 mag that has a lower power scope in case one ends up in your lap out of no where
