I bought 500 rounds of this ammo to try out. I shot 50 rounds this weekend. I am very impressed with the accuracy, but a little disappointed with the velocity.

I was shooting an AR with a SS 18" 8-twist barrel with 5.56 Nato chamber. Temp was 55F. DA was ~370.

My first mag I decided to try going right to steel targets between 225 to 540 yards using my dope for 75 gr PPU. I started out missing most targets beyond 325 yards until I realized that I was hitting consistently low and began holding high on the targets.

I then shot a couple groups at 225 yards (my zero range for this rifle). The groups were well under MOA, hovering between 1 and 1.5 inches at 225 yards. However, impact was approx 1 inch low compared with where the PPU 75's hit.

I then chrono'ed 10 rounds. Average velocity was 2525 FPS. This is 95 FPS slower than my rifle averages with the .223 pressure PPU 75 gr ammo.

While the accuracy was great, I'm kind of bummed about the low velocity. I can't really complain given the price and accuracy level. However, this is advertised as 5.56 pressure, so I did not expect it to shoot substantially slower than the relatively slow PPU stuff. Can anyone tell me if this is standard for the run-n-gun ammo, or if I maybe just got a slow lot?

(On a side note, I also bought several different .308 loads and they are all outstanding in both accuracy and velocity)

When I ordered mine, I asked about the velocity out of a 16" SS Novekse barrel and they gave me ~2625 fps.

I'm using the same ammunition and chrono'ed 20 rounds through my 16" WOA barrel back when I first got my case of ammo and got an average of about 2650 fps. I'd say it's definitely running slow and give Southwest a call about it to see what's up.

Trigger Monkey out of curiosity is 2650 out of a 18" bbl? I have yet to chronograph any of my SW run N gun.

From an 18" barrel I don't see why it wouldn't be in the neighborhood of 2700 fps but YMMV.

Ah should've re-read my mistake. Just gonna have to brake out my buddies chrono and get to work.

No worries. I haven't regretted getting picking up a case of the 77 gr Run N Gun over their standard match ammo, it's proven to be a solid performer out of my gun. I can't wait to stretch its legs a little and see what my actual dope is going to be though.

I haven't had reason to change either. Especially with the price. I have 250rds stocked and ready to go. Best i've been able to do is around 1/2 MOA but it's going to take some practice for me. It's just a whole different animal trying to get pinpoint precision out of a gas gun versus my bolt rifle. Going to eventually have to get high sand bags to try resting on the buffer tube instead of the end of the carbine stock.

Re: Velocity of Southwest 77 gr 5.56mm run-n-gun

Thanks everyone. I guess I got a slow batch. I just wanted to make sure that this wasn't standard. I won't hesitate to buy more knowing that future batches will most likely run faster.

Mike - I will PM you my info, but please don't tale this thread as a complaint. Given the consistency / accuracy of the ammo, I'm willing to bet the anomaly is with the powder manufacturer, rather than something SWA did. From the responses here, I;m confident future batches will run quicker.

It aloud for feedback from others their experiences with this product with details. It is hard to to figure out issues without actually having the product in my hands after a problem occurs.

I can tell this is not a hate on thread, and it is more informational seeking. When your ready, just pm me your order number and I will get a box sent to you to confirm what I think the issue is and go from there.
