Well, I got my new Vepr in on Wednesday. I can honestly say, this is the nicest AK that i own. the fit/finish is superb, and the action is as smooth as glass. WAAAY better than my Saiga ever was.

It's chambered in 7.62x54r, rather than the standard 7.62x39, .223, .5.45, .308, and i did this because ammo is so cheap. i had 2000rnds already for my Mosin, and I purchased another 1760rnds of heavy-ball 182grn for this rifle for $120.

some quick features of this rifle:
-16.5" barrel
-5 round and 10 round mags
-integrated FS/GB sights
-flip-up 100 and 300 meter rear sights
-very comfortable thumbhole (butthole) stock
-threaded 14x1LH muzzle (capped for importation)
-side scope attachment rail
-secondary dust cover integrated into recoil spring to make up for the larger round and bolt travel

things ive added:
-Tapco AMD style extended brake (making the actual length 20.5")
-6-24x50 AOE Illuminated scope
-side scope mount
-Harris collapsable bipod (changed out the front sling swivel to accept the mount)
-stock ammo carrier (soon to be holding a cheek piece)
-did some shaving on the trigger to take it up a bit

heres some pics at my home and at the range today

Took her to the range today and i was very impressed. iron sights were DEAD ON at 50-100yrds (its only a 100yrd range). i kept it on the 100meter setting for both and it didnt seem to matter distance, just shot right where i pointed it every time.

the scope was an interesting issue...
ive never used a scope before today, so im sure it was quite humorous watching me trying to get it to hit the paper. luckily there was an old guy out there that helped me out and showed me how to bore-sight and all that. for a while there i was shooting so low there was dirt coming back and hitting me in the face...

now, with that said, i did my best to get it all dialed in and hitting at POA. by the time i got it figured out, i was nearly out of ammo, but i did manage to get a few good groups on the last target. im not the best shot, and certainly dont have the scope thing all figured out yet, but its not too bad

PLEASE DONT MAKE FUN OF MY SHOOTING, I KNOW I SUCK

like i said, im not a great shooter, but i think i did pretty decent at 100yrds. the guy next to me was shooting a 308 bolt action within a dime, so i looked pretty stupid...

heres a couple quick videos i had the other guy shoot for me, just so yall could see it in action.

1st shots out of the rifle (lifted my head on the last shot to try and figure out where the bullets were going...)

Re: Vepr 54r

Two questions:
What did you use to change out the front swivel for the Harris bipod?
And where did you manage to pick up that many rounds for that cheap?
