Thinking of going the acog route, and was wanting opinions of soliders that have been there (or still there) and done that. Actual use in actual field conditions.
One model liked over the others?

I like the TA31 with the Donut of Death reticle.

They are extremely rugged optics with very good glass. For an AR platform in rural terrain they are ideal. There are a lot of options to back them up with a RDS also to give them some more versatility in urban environments.

Well im not just chiming in because i happen to be selling a brand new Acog TA31F, but they are undoubtably one of the most dependable and rugged optics Ive ever used.

Been on multiple deployments to many differnt AOs and the Acog has always stood up to the test. Never lost my zero, no worries about batteries, just damn good optics.

I have a lot of time behind Acogs, If you have any questions about them feel free to shoot a PM.

I always got a red dot on my issued weapon,.. That said when I got home from my last deployment I went and bought a civi version of the ACOG,.I love mine and it was the best $$$$ I have spent on optics.

Yes. It legitimately is that much better than the TA31's.

Get a Larue RCO mount for it as well.

I was issued an NSN model along with an EOTech downrange in OIF. The EOTech stayed on the M4 outside the wire as bouncing around in a vehicle and having the majority of threats in crowded street favored it. The 4x magnification of the ACOG along with it's BDC was much better suited to a static defensive position, so it was mounted back behind the wire where I was most likely to employ my M4 from a rooftop aiming into alleyways with lots of civilians.

ACOGs are very rugged and high quality, but they are fixed power and are more useful in wide open environments where engagements tend to occur beyond 300m (ie A'stan).

Yea they are rugged and can take a beating... but you can buy a 1-4 leupy or nightforce for the same price and it wouldn't be a fixed 4 power...

Any comments on the fiber optic glowing at night & giving away one's position? And yeah, I know that a bit of tape fixes that, just curious as to real world experiences about said issue.

And were you not on a budget what optic(s)would you choose if you were to go back there, or someplace else?
Um, yeah, I'm talking common stuff, not $30k multispectral imagers.

I would rather have a Short Dot or NXS 1-4X for the versatility of having 1x and 4X, if money were no object.

You can get a like new ACOG for half of what the NXS in a Larue mount costs. You can get an ACOG for about 40% of a Short Dot and mount.

i am NOT a war Vet.., but i have had a TA-31 ACOG "with the Donut of Death reticle" for 5+ years it has the GG&G Accucam Quick Detach ACOG Mounting System, i switch it from one carbine to another and zeroing is within a few clicks to re-zero it, the guns it has been mounted on are treated roughly, but <span style="font-weight: bold">NOT</span> abused and the TA-31 is still new looking and holds point of aim very well, you can not go wrong with one, i wish i had three or four more, but my checking account will not allow it !!

You have to match the equipment to the mission. If the mission requires a low power fixed optic without external turrets then the ACOG is a good route to take. I have only been issued the old non-BAC crosshairs version for my M16A2 back in the day. It worked well for a spotters rifle.

I had an early Elcan, and it was not as rugged as I had expected. I preferred the ACOG.

With the ACOG the eye relief is a bit short for calibers larger than .223, and with some units each adjustment was not precise, but they are rugged, once zero'd correctly will hold the zero, and the glass is excellent.

I have always loved using one.

The only problems I had were from the fiber-optic tube creating too much illumination in the reticle during daylight ours in iraq. Easy fix by putting 100mph tape over most of it.

Had a doctor optic on top, so the issues of not having a red dot for CQM were not an issue. The doctor also took a huge blow and cracked the lens in it, but it still worked.

Great battle optic in my book.

I used one for about 6 months in Baghdad (had an aimpoint for the other 6). I preferred it over the aimpoint most of the time. Inside 20 yards or so I'm a *little* faster with an aimpoint... so if you were mainly going to be kicking doors I'd opt for some sort of non-magnified red dot. For general use, I loves me an ACOG. In fact, I enjoyed it so much I bought a TA31F when I got home.

I can't figure out why it took the military SOOO LOOOONG to adopt them, they've been around & "approved" for decades.
Back in the early eightys Clint Smith gave'em his seal of approval. Never will figure out the procurement process, too many back room deals. War's just another business to some.

My fav is the TA33. So fast, and the eye relief is fantastic compared to the TA31 ECOS that I used to have. Both were excellent optics, I just cut my eye-brow a couple times on the ECOS and got tired of having to hump it with my face! The TA33 fixed all that.

It didn't. They were out there. They just weren't an general infantry item. The Marine Corps issued them to MEU(SOC) units on a limited basis in the 90's. Hence my experience with them.

Yeah, I played a lot with some Force guys right about then. A few guys were T&E'ing them as issue items. Some picked up units out of their own pockets. Still, they were pretty rare.
That was back in the day when all of their mag pockets & such were integrel to their kevlar. Yeah, back in the day no doubt. Great guys, & we had some FUN. Positively wicked senses of humor ;-)

I maintain 165 M4's and 10 A4's, all fitted with Trijicons RCOs

AN/PVQ-31A for the A4's
AN/PVQ-31B for the M4's

Let me first say that PFCs and Lcpls are hard on gear....
They break alot of shit, they loose alot of shit.

With that said, I see atleast 2-3 RCO's come back fucked up after most any field op.

Usualy its one of 2 things, either moisure inside the optic, or internal haze/mist which will go from barely noticable to "I cant see anything out of it" in the course of about a week.

If the RCO developes either of the 2 discrepencies above, it goes to a Maint. Bn. who sends it straight to Trijicon, and 99% of the time they deem it FUBAR.

Take it for what its worth, but Ide rather have an ill. variable power in the same price range.

I was hunting coyotes last evening with a good Marine GySgt friend of mine and he has an ACOG on his M4 that he was shooting.

It could just be me, but the eye relief was horrible... If I would have shot it, I would have had charging handle up my nose all day long.

Right at sunset, after looking through my USO SN4 all I could was LOL!

I am not a Vet but I can say that my ACOG on my 308 has not caused my any problems with eye relief. Yes it is rather small to say the least but you learn to adjust to it like any other optic.
