Vicodin sucks

Went to the dentist tody and had a tooth pulled. Hurts like a mother f$#ker. So they gave me vicodin. Asked for percocet (they gave me that when they put the pin in my ankle and it works) and got vicodin. Might as well take two asprin and..... nevermind.......

Whats the deal. Im 62, have built and sold two sucessful business', went back to college at 40 and graduated from a first rate University at 45 with a B+ gpa.. Never been addicted to any thing but cigarettes and that soft, warm, damp, furry stuff that men like so much.....women. Broke the addition to cigs cold turkey and dont want to break the other.

So why is that a self supporting honorable, American citizen, cant have something for pain that actually works. Like Ill get addicted with 20 of them.

F%#k the government idiots that made these stupid laws. Think Ill have a bottle of red wine and say good night.

As much as I hate Oxycontin, when it is needed it sure does a good job. Straight, I'm talking. The 5 or 10 mg's that are in Perc's are somewhat a waste of time.

Again, when it's needed. When I was on that crap, I got off them as fast as I could. No idea what a 'vicodin' is like. Don't ever want to know.

Yes, the government does make it difficult to prescribe certain narcotics; although if your doc could write for Vicodin it is very likely that your doctor/dentist has "permission" or license to write for anything from Codeine in cough syrup to percocet to oxycontin or fentanyl; honestly vicodin is the strongest pain med. that doesn't require triplicate scripts. Triplicate scripts cost money, a whole lot of time extra time in record keeping, and opens that doc up to a whole lot of extra DEA scrutiny and auditing risk. Laws just passes that docs who write any controlled substances are going demonstrate that completed a certain # of hours/CME's in pain management; rumor has it those mandated courses will be government-run and fairly $$$.

I thought dentists prefer to use Vicoprofen (Vicodin & ibuprofen) or Vicodin + steroids or other anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling.

Back in the early 90's I had a stuck kidney stone and had to wait for the lithrotripsy trialer to get to town to get that damn stone pulverized with the sound waves. During that 20 day wait the urologist perscribed me Vicodin with the limit up up to 2000 mg. per dose 3 times a day. I can say this. 2000 mg's of Vicodin and a 12 pack of beer and you'll not feel a thing. However, you might get mean as a snake and end up doing very, very, bad, bad, things.

In my defense the dentist did have to dig out a broken root, and then scrape the bone.

How would you feel if "the government" told you "You can have a 22 caliber but you dont need a 308, or 338 lapua, or 50 bmg. Theyre two powerful and you might get hurt.".

Or for the auto enthusiast, "You can only have 4 cylinders...theyre more efficient and you dont need all that 427 power any way....might get hurt. In fact lets outlaw nascar....too many injuries".

FTS, what Im talking about is the right of a free, self supporting, respectful citizen, to choose his own path.

Check your dose. The 2000mg/day limit he imposed is the Tylenol that is bound with the Hydrocodone.

Simple truth: If you were Rxd a med that was too strong and caused injury what do you thing would happen when a PI attorney and the State Board got through with the Physician? You have to start low and titrate to effect sometimes with the opiate nieve. I would advise the prescriber that you are being under-medicated and if he connot offer an acceptable solution, then head to your local ER for appropriate treatment.

I was under the impression that scripts are at the doctors discretion.
I can't possibly imagine how so many pharmas are available to be abused if that is not the case.

My doc offered me more painkillers when I went back after 2 weeks of ulcers in my mouth and throat.

For the most part they are, though if he over prescribes something he can come under scrutiny. Case in point, Michael Jackson's physician. I also heard that Florida is getting torn up for peing a prescription mill. Guys flying in from O,io and buying 600 Oxycodones at $2.00 each and flying back and getting $10.00 eachmand more. Im not suggesting drug abuse, just rights for citizens, across all genres. I can read a PDR as well as the doc, thank you.

im a pharmacist and i can tell you that doctors have to be really careful about what they give people and when. i probably spend 50% of my time fighting with drug seekers and the doctors who are too lazy to stop them. so then its my job and refusing scripts makes drug seekers a bit agitated.

vicodin works wonders for some people. others not so much. depends on the person. ive seen people naive to opioids take 7 mg IV pushes of hydromorphone. to give you an idea, id probably be in a coma if they gave that to me, and im not kidding. then ive seen guys get nasty car accidents, get prescribed vicodin, and be happy as a clam. it just depends on the person, the type of pain and a plethora of other things.

don't be fooled though, you can get addicted with even just 5-10 tabs. its very patient specific. the longer you are on them the higher the chance, but even small doses for short times can addict some people. never take opioids unless necessary or if you know how you react to them.

I get kidney stone all the time and when i go to the doc. i get 50 mg of demaral and 25 mg of Benadryl because i itch and have trouble breathing with any type of drugs if i take oraly but iv or im i do alot better. I am 65 and went to a new back Doc last week and he asked me if i was there for drugs? after i i got done talking to him in a manner he would understand i walked out. Maggot i know what you mean. MM

As a current dentist here in Oregon I can say that Tbannister hit it on the head. I can prescribe for Schedule II narcotics, but prefer not too unless absolutely necessary. Not sure about other states, but in OR a Schedule II has to be carried into the pharmacy in hard copy with my physical signature on it. This means that a sheet of paper with my DEA #, NPI #, and signature have left the office and are floating out and about in public.

There is quite a market for that info to be sold to and illegally used. A schedule III narcotic prescription can be scanned/faxed to a pharmacy. This allows for the patient to recieve narctotic medication for mild to moderate pain control without releasing my DEA# etc.. Demerol, Dilaudid, Percocet are all Schedule II whereas Vicodin, Vicoprofen are Schedule III.

The drug seekers have really messed the system up for people with legitimate pain issues, and yes at least once a week I will have someone come into the office that seem to have a greater knowledge of pharmacology than I do and specifically request medications by name.

If you are still having moderate to severe pain that the medication isn't controlling after this length of time then get your doc on the horn and request a post-op exam. You paid good money for treatment and if complications are arising from the surgery he needs to be aware of it.

Thanks Match, I had the same symptom, it just made me itch and feel generally uncomfortable. I guess Im allergic as well. No more of that.

I feel for you guys with the kidney stones. I can see what it took outof my neighbor.

Vicodin has been prescribed ot me many time for various things including some back problems....even for a tooth problem one time.

Had a nice little kidney-stone episode, actually two, in recent weeks and I got my first exposure to Dilaudid at the care facility and Percocet for home use. Wow.....that Dilaudid is some strong stuff. Both make me want to heave.....but the pain makes them worth using.

I will take a tooth problem and Vicodin over a kidney-stone and any drug you can name. That is some fucking pain!

I hope you get some relief!

I hate vicoden, I get sick to my stomach evey time I take it regardless whether I take it with or without food. Doctor gave me some when I had my hernia surgery and I explained that it doesn't agree with me but he said just eat with it. It's not fun vomiting when you just got cut open for a hernia.

The valume or muscle relaxer pill is mkaing me feel funny...

You can thank the nanny state. It has nothing to do with pill popping or those who do it, but government wanting to have control over what people can put in their bodies.

Drugs (of any kind) are not the problem; prohibition is.

The synthetic Codeines in Oxycontin, Percocet/Percodan, and Vicodin are processed in the body by enzymes and converted into morphine, which is what actually is the analgesic. About 15% of the population are lacking a enzyme or several to make the conversion. So while some can take a 5 mg Vicodin and be flying high others can take a bucket full and get no pain relief at all. I am one of the latter, and so is my sister and mother.
So you tell the doctor or dentist up front you are "sensitive" to all codienes and synthetic codienes. Not allergic, sensitive. You tell them up front they just dont work, and your body doesn't convert them. Any doctor or dentist out there knows about this problem. tell them you need Dilaudid 2 mg instead. If they are hesitent insist. Say that you refuse to be left "in pain" and do not have a drug dependancy issue. Pain management is a majr issue for the last 20 years, and they will give you the Dilaudid if you make it clear why they are required.
They are a tiny pill, but very potent. One is equal in potency to about 2 percocet. They may shut down your GI tract and cause you to not digest anything, so when you get up hours after taking one you may throw up everything (it would appear) you ate or drank long before. Opiates do that.
But you will be pain free.
Insist on "Proper Analgesia", and you will get it. Don't settle for just "Motrin 800". They are very useful, especially after 2 or better 3 doses 8 hours apart, but Dilaudid is what you need if the other drugs don't work for you.
I'm a long time RN and am familiar with the problem. We see it all the time, but many nurses and even doctors don't recognize it. The first thing that comes to mind is "Drug Seeking", but a skilled and competent observer will recognize it for what it really is.

Vicodin come in doses of 5/7.5/10/or 15 mg, each with 325 mg of tylenol also in the pill. It works very well with opiate type analgesics and makes them more much effective at lower doses. The restriction was on the amount of tylenol/acetominophen you would be taking, which in high doses quickly and permanetly screws up your liver seriously.
