They are refereed to as dead hooker blankets around here. While they are free some come with odd smells and stains.

Re: Visitor while shooting.

Amazing, I haven't seen one of those since I was in college in the 2003 timeframe. I was working on a rural water system and would see them out near Gorman and De Leon while reading meters. We have a red ant bed in our back yard that I refuse to let my wife kill off hoping to spot one of these little fella's out there.

I don't even know where we got ours from anymore. Mine has some suspicious stains that I think once was a dead hooker from one of the down town hotels.

Re: Visitor while shooting.

One of the coolest animals I have ever had the privilege to play with. I grew up on a ranch in the Texas Panhandle and those were pretty common. They are pretty docile and my siblings and I would handle them regularly and then let them go.

Re: Visitor while shooting.

I haven't seen one of those in over 15yrs. What many people don't know is they're considered to be a threatened species and if caught with one in your possession, you could be fined as much as $1000. It is also one of my favorite reptiles, having caught and released them when I was a kid.

They are still common out here, this is the 3rd one of this season. No agriculture for 100 miles so little pesticide use to kill off their food sources. The Texas horned lizard is the threatened variety, that im aware of.

Threatened, protected or not I think they are awesome little creatures and would never intentionally harm one. In fact this little guy tried to bury himself under the Jeep tire so I had to dig him out and move him to the safety of a near by bush before moving the jeep.

Re: Visitor while shooting.

I think the decline of them in TX is related to the fire ants that have infested. I don't think they can eat them the same as they eat the larger red ants which are also affected by those damn fire ants. It makes sense, when I was a kid red ants were everywhere and so were the toads, these days all you see is fire ants and hardly any reds which also means less toads...
