Trying to outfit a Colt Competition CRE-18 (link below) with a scope. LGS has both the Vortx 4-16x50FFP and 6-24x50FFP

Looking for advice on pros/cons/recommendations

Desired use for this specific gun is longer distances (not set on exact distances but would like to be able to reach at least 500 yards), the one caveat is I like the 4 more than the 6 on the front end for closer range shooting (I guess more of a just in case thing)...does the 6 on the front end limit me too much? I am ok with the FFP for closer shooting

Sorry if not a lot of detail above...

18" barrel and 1 in 8 rh twist

Thanks all

Re: Vortex 4-16 FFP vs 6-24 FFP

You will have more than enough magnification at 16x to shoot really well at 500 yards. I just bought the 6-24 but I plan on shooting 1000-1300 yards with my 308

Re: Vortex 4-16 FFP vs 6-24 FFP

I've heard (no experience with the 4-16) that the 6-24 has better optical quality. 6x IS too much for me close in. It blurs at 25 yards for close range (even with the parallax adjust at 50), and targets aren't as fast to acquire. When hunting, I swear I could have engaged this deer faster and better at about 50 yards if I had less mag. I had a 350 yard plot and the damn thing chose a close approach. I've thought about adding a diagonal mount to my rail for a Fastfire which may help. I'm not getting rid of the 6-24, I like it too much; especially shooting at 1000 yards.

Re: Vortex 4-16 FFP vs 6-24 FFP

The 6-24 is an awful big scope to top an AR with, unless it is a dedicated varmint rig.

For your intended purposes the 4-16 would be better, the 2-10 weaver or the new 2.5-10 PST are better suited to your tasks

Re: Vortex 4-16 FFP vs 6-24 FFP

When you guys say "close" shots, what range are you referring to? I am eyeing a PST 6-24 FFP for my 10fp and want to make sure I wont lose anything at 100yds and greater.

Re: Vortex 4-16 FFP vs 6-24 FFP

I find the 6-24 to be very difficult to hunt with at close ranges. The one time I took it in the blind with me I couldnt track the hogs as they moved through. Even at 6x, field of view was limited and made tracking hogs at 50-75 yards tough.

Shooting paper at 100 or steel at 800, the 6-24 works great.

If you plan to hunt with it and use it for multiple roles, the 4-16 may be better suited. With the rifle you mention being a .223, I would go 4-16. The 4x is better for hunting or close work and 16x should give you plenty of visibility at 5-600.

Re: Vortex 4-16 FFP vs 6-24 FFP

i'd go with the 4-16. unless you're going for a little more of a long range build. then again, plenty of people have shot well at long range with a fixed 10x

Re: Vortex 4-16 FFP vs 6-24 FFP

I shot 800 yds. A couple of weeks ago using my S&B 5.5x25x56. I only was using 15x. Never had a problem. Get what your comfortable with. 16x will work just fine for what you'll be doing.

Re: Vortex 4-16 FFP vs 6-24 FFP

I asked almost the same question a while back. The only difference is that I put my PST on my Savage LRP in 260 which I rarely shoot in closer than 200 yds. For your needs, I vote with everyone else, get the 4-16 especially if you plan to shoot/hunt in land that is not wide open.
