Anyone compared the Vortex to Nightforce or Swarovski or Minox? What magnification and what did you think?

Minox, I can not speak about as I have no experiance with that.
Vortex is a great midrange unit. Very nice glass. Magnification is going to be based on the shooting you plan for the rifle.

You do realize that Vortex makes several different product lines and that the Razor competes head to head quite nicely with the Nightforce, right?

Right you are, I've had PST and Viper on the brain all day. The Razor is in direct comp. with the Nightforce.

Right you are, I've had PST and Viper on the brain all day. The Razor is in direct comp. with the Nightforce.

Well, John is right, the Razor, which escaped my train of thought, and, although I do not have one of those, is supposed to be very much in line with Nightforce.
Opinion, I have two Vipers. They both comapre to my VX-IIIs and Mk4 in every way quality wise and durability wise. Glass is on par with my USO ST10 so I believe that puts them pretty high. I do not own a Nightforce but I have had the pleasure of playing with a few owned by friends and my Vipers are not quite that good, but that is my opinon as some guys say their Leupys have better glass than the Nightforce, but I don't see it personally. The Swarovski (one spotter) glass is of course going to pass the Viper and PST, not sure about the Razor. It probably still does not compare to Schmidt...

From what I've seen, you really can't compare a PST to a Nightforce or Swaro. The PST is going to compare very favorably to scopes in its price range and the Nightforce and Swaro compare favorably to scopes in their price range. Comparing the PST to a Nightforce or Swaro is like comparing apples and oranges.
The HD series of Vortex scopes are another matter and do compare favorably to scopes that are similarly priced. In fact, I do know one guy that sold his Nightforce to fund the purchase of a Vortex Razor.
I can't say anything about the Minox. To be truthful, I've never heard of them.

they way i look at it, i love the durability of NF, however it is pale in comparison of the costomer service of PST. Ill go with lower optics but better Costomer service. My next BIG scope will be the VortexHD line due to their outstanding costomer service.

Why wouldn't Swarovski be in the discussion? They are pretty tough scopes in their own rite. I don't think they're as tough as a Nightforce or the like, but they are tough. They'll take a good knock without loosing their zero. They do offer reticles with drop compensation. Although they don't come with "tactical" turrets per se, the adjustments do have very positive clicks and the scopes are water proof with the covers off. They are also zero resettable. If comparing the Z5 line to Nightforce scopes, the glass in the Swaros is better and they offer a wider field of view. It's a matter of what's important to you.
Me, I dumped the Swaros in favor of Nightforce because I wanted something super tough and the Nightforce does it for me.

Having seen a Razor at a shooting show i can tell you that once i got to the Hensoldt and S&B stand i soon forgot about the Razor.

Actually the 5-25s can be had for under $3000 if you shop around and call. I know a couple of Hide vendors who sell them for around $2900.
But that said the Razor is around $1800 street price from Hide vendors so there still is a good difference in cost.
For an optic in it's price range, the Razor is an excellent optic. Has all the features the shooter wants or needs and good reticle choices.

Glass on a NF is not amazing... Good enough but not awesome. I have a PST, Weaver Tacticals (2 of them), Elite 6500, Millet TRS-1, and had a nightforce. (sold it to buy 2 PST's.
Glass Ratings: Put them all to 15-16 power.
Weaver-NF tie leaning towards the weaver. (I said NF was not amazing, yes, but its also $1k more than all these scopes!)
Elite 6500.
PST. I have a 4-16 mounted now but have a 6-24 coming.
Millet
This is how I see all of these. I didn't read other peoples reviews to come to these conclusions. I own and use all of these.
Glass on a NF is not amazing... Good enough but not awesome. I have a PST, Weaver Tacticals (2 of them), Elite 6500, Millet TRS-1, and had a nightforce. (sold it to buy 2 PST's.
Glass Ratings: Put them all to 15-16 power.
Weaver-NF tie leaning towards the weaver. (I said NF was not amazing, yes, but its also $1k more than all these scopes!)
Elite 6500.
PST. I have a 4-16 mounted now but have a 6-24 coming.
Millet

Im amazed that S&B can get me a top spec military scope for the same price Vortex manages to get their Razor HD on sale here for.
Vortex might be all the rage in the US but their international sales will fall flat on their face at this rate.
I think its because they think NF are charging more than a S&B here in the UK which means they can get away with it.
Truth is no one wants a NF and no one wants a Razor either.

You're killing me man. I'm just trying to be patient waiting for the new weaver tactical to be released. Same MSRP price as the old 4-20 version, still betting it will be around the $800 mark. With all things considered I'm not even bothering with a PST, I'm only missing a zero stop shim big deal I'll take better glass.

With all things considered I'm not even bothering with a PST, I'm only missing a zero stop shim big deal I'll take better glass.

I have been talking with Weaver's technical guys over the last week or so trying to get them on board. They are working on more Mil/Mil stuff, but I'm a MOA guy. Basically told them to make a PST with their glass.... It seemed well recieved so we will see....

I have the 4.5-30. after 24x is starts getting dark but still usable.
Most of my shooting is after work when it's getting dark. My rating are the same for daylight or dusk shooting.

The weaver also has a ton more elevation adjustment, I like the Power ration of 3-15 better than the 4-16 also. For $750 that is a killer deal.

The weaver also has a ton more elevation adjustment, I like the Power ration of 3-15 better than the 4-16 also. For $750 that is a killer deal.

WOW that's a deal. I'm going to move some funds around and order one. I'm thoroughly impressed with the 3-10 grand slam tactical, and liked what I saw from a 4-20 tactical with the limited time I got to play with one. FFP, Illumination, and mil/mil in a quality scope... I'll take one.

What features are those? The only thing it lacks to Vortex is a zero stop, which you can easily make a shim just like Vortex uses from delrin. It has many features that the Sightron doesn't, I don't think Sightron makes a FFP scope at all.

Plus being able to get it right now sure helps... Hope you enjoy yours when it gets there!

berettaman, it was 308newb on here who was doing the homemade zero stops. Can't seem to find the actual thread on here, but if Redneck has made them perhaps he could help us out. I remember the original thread & it seemed fairly simple to do, but IIRC Nightforce was threatening to void warranties if they found retuned (damaged) scopes were used with these homemade stops.

I'm not sure why everybody gets wrapped up in MOA knobs thinking there is some sort of math involved with them when they use a mil reticle that if anything math is involved with. If you can use a mil reticle you can use mil knobs no problem. All your doing with the knobs is dialing what a ballistic program or ballistic card is telling you, or dialing what you see from your reticle so it doesn't matter if their in mils. Just get the mil model and rock on.

Sorry but I don't recall 100% off the top of my head but I got a section of delrin plastic rod with a diameter just slightly smaller than the inside of the turret, I had to drill the center out to fit around where the center sticks out and then I cut it down until the knob stopped close to where I wanted it. It's hard to make it perfect with this type of zero stop but it's that same thing the PST's come with and does work.

I can guarantee you thats his thinking into not wanting mil knobs. He's already using a mil reticle which is over half way there. Going with mil knobs with it will only make things easier and won't change a thing except for whats written on his ballistic cards.

No, it's a MOA/MOA setup. It also depends on how you've memorized your drops. If you've memorized it all in inches, then you're field calculating it and then it's not simply reading it off a card.
