In anticipation of trying long range shooting, maybe PRS or F-class, I bought what seemed like a good deal, Vortex Diamonback Tactical MRAD 4-16x44 FFP, when it was $349 at Sportsman's.

Now that I'm reading more, maybe this is not up to the task?

I can put if on my .22 or .17 and buy something better, but do I need to?

Thanks.

I have the same scope mounted on a .17 Hummer, at which it is exceptional out to 200-250 yards. For PRS or F-class, I'd move up to something better.

i have one on my r700 vtr 308 (which shoots awful). the glass is good enough to 500-800 ish yards not bad for the price. i think it fits that rifle but i would definately get something else for PRS work

this was my entry into mil christmas tree style reticles to see if i like it enough make the switch from moa

4-16 might be ok. I was disappointed with my 6-24, and sold it. After about 12x the eye box got really small and image quality wasn’t great unless I was close to the target and it was a clear sunny day.

Does it hold zero? Does it track? Can you see the targets? I’d say take it to a match and see what happens, ask to look through some other scopes while you’re there. Will you want to buy something better? Probably. But you’ll learn what is/isn’t valuable to YOU and can make a more informed decision.

Its a start I agree with the person that said tobtake it out to a match or use it fir a few months and see for yourself, you already got it. If its not to your liking it will fit nicely on your rimfire. I had a 6-24 and didnt care for the mushy turrets but everything else was fine.

I have a DB Tactical 4-16 that I've been passing around different rifles for about a year now and I like it. I have no major complaints with it after having it mounted on some .22's, a .223, and a 6 CM as the glass is more than adequate, it tracks well, and it has a nice FFP reticle. IMO the only thing really holding this scope back is the lack of a zero stop or any kind of revolution indicator, which is wouldn't use it on a rimfire rifle I would compete with. I think it'll be fine on a centerfire rifle to get you started because you'll probably never go much into the second rev with a 6.5CM or 6CM.

I briefly had the 6-24 and returned it for some of the same reasons above, I couldn't live with the degradation in image quality at higher magnification. I've talked to guys though that loved theirs so maybe it's a personal preference thing but I think the 4-16 is a solid entry level option.

You've got the scope already so you've got nothing to lose by giving it a try. You don't even have to use it in a match, just take it to a facility where you can try it at longer ranges and at different sized targets, preferably beyond 200 yds.

I've shot some PRS matches and if you can identify your targets (glass quality) and dial elevation (turret tracking) then you're in the game. Rarely do I go over about 18x with my Vortex Razor in a match, so 16x is fine.

I also shoot mid range F class and you will find that 16x is a little low on the magnification for really placing your shots on that 1/2 moa X ring.

And you haven't said what CF rifle you might mount it on. A M700 .308 Win? go for it. If you have the budget to get an Impact action with a Bartlein barrel in an MPA chassis then step up to NF or the Razor.

Thanks Dixie Rifleman. People over in bolt guns have been helping me. Thinking on the Tikka T3x CTR 24" stainless 24".

I have the T3X in the TAC A1 chassis. Love it. The T3X is one smooth factory action and though the Tikka mags are proprietary they feed great. Straight from the factory this rifle is just amazingly accurate. Though the Tikka barrels have a reputation of being a little slow and I have seen evidence of that with mine as well.

I also had a Rem 700 action blueprinted and a Krieger barrel chambered in 6mm Creedmoor by Greg Tannel. It resides in a Manners stock. It is also very accurate but no more so than the Tikka and I like the T3X action better. I don't think you would be disappointed with Tikka.

Really, the Tikka is as accurate as that hot rod custom with a Krieger on it? That turns my head. I've been on about this in another thread, and about decided to build a custom instead of a Tikka. But it will be a while before I can do either financially so there's plenty of time to think on it.

Thanks.

I can tell you for a fact that scope is wholly inadequate for F class competition. Can you use it? Sure, you can use anything. Will it hold you back? Definitely.

I have the 6-24x50 in mrad and it is ok, but the glass starts to gets fuzzy as you zoom out past 16x to 24x, though I mostly use 12 to 16 power when I am shooting out 800 yards. Now you could use it for PRS shooting until you have the funds to get something better. For F class, I would look at the Vortex Golden Eagle series or the Nightforce competition/benchrest series.
