My new Vortex PMR 34mm seems to have bad threads. I know Vortex warranty will take care of it, but I'm not sure if I should ask for a replacement screw a new set of rings. One of the screws had significant resistance when I backed it out to mount the scope. It also had resistance going back in. The other three screws all turned easily (until they were tight, as expected). I pulled the difficult screw all the way out and the threads are shiny. I'm not sure if it is a bad screw or if the rings were not tapped properly. If it is just a bad screw, would the bad screw damage the threads in the rings? Any thoughts on what to ask for when I call Vortex?

Since the screw is damaged to that degree, there is probably matching damage in the ring threads as well. It could have been a bad or worn tap, debris in the threads before assembly etc. I think a new ring will be the likely solution.

A few months ago when I was mounting a Leupold VX6 HD in Leupold rings, one of the cap screws wouldn't tighten in the ring. A close look with a loupe showed the screw was only threaded on one side of the shaft. A bad screw. Contacted Leupold and they sent a couple of replacements.

Vortex should take care of you.
