Ok guys,

Dilemma here. Im getting a remmy 5r in .308. was gonna put a swarovski z6i 2.5x15x56 with illum. ballistic reticle. But due to finances, i am considering either a vortex razor 5x20x50, or a PST 4x16x50. I need to get my total price down to around 3 g's or so. how much difference in glass quality between these 2 scopes? price diff of about $1000.

I'm curious also....I'd be really surprised if the razor didn't have better glass but it may be like splitting hairs to many of us. I was about to get a PST but have just put out some targets at 1500 yds to start working on and so am now leaning towards the razor for the added focal length.
I'd like to hear from people who have looked through the glass of both of those.

The razor is exceptional. A buddy of mine just got the pst but I have not been able to look through it yet. I did not go with the razor because I wanted to get a 6x24 and they do not offer it yet. Hopefully, they will in the future.

The Razor glass is better but $1000+ better? It depends on what you expect. I've got the normal Viper, PST, Nightforce, and have looked a lot through a Razor. I think you start capping out on returns around $1500 mark but the Razor glass was the best out of those scopes.

The $1000+ extra for the Razor isn't just about glass. You get a top notch Zero Stop. You get a "bomb resistant" scope. You get a huge amount of elevation adjustment. You are getting a different class of scope all together.

If you want a fantastic scope for the money, look toward the PST line. You want the same scope on a budget minus a couple of features, get the older Viper. If you want to step it up but want to stay in the 4-16 range, look at a 3.5-15x Nigthforce. The Razor is a great scope and priced accordingly.

For Vortex scopes, I'd recommend Scott at Liberty Optics as well. Good luck with your purchase.

well the guns a 308, and im gonna be using it to hunt with, so 1000 or 1500 yds is def not in the equation for me. Just curious to know the quality jump from the $1000 pst, to the $2000 razor

The pst has great reviews but like the other poster stated, you are getting alot more scope than just the glass. 35mm tube, lots of elevation, hd glass and zero stop. The warranty on either is fantastic. The nightforce can be had in the 5x22 for less than the razor but does not come with zero stop unless you pay more and that would put it up with the razor. The 3x15 nightforce can be had for much less. If you are not going to be using the adjustments much, than zero stop is probably not a big thing. The 35mm rings are not cheap so remember that if going with the razor.

Quality is pretty damn good on the Viper's. I've had IOR's that looked like crap in terms of assembly vs the Viper's. The IOR glass was better but the knobs, the fit and finish, hell, even the painted numbers looked like crap compared to the Viper's.

Quality is just a tad better on the Razor. Made in Japan vs the Philippines for the Vipers. You can tell more care was given to it and the fit is just perfect. Like I said, I feel its worth the $$$$.

For your application, I'd recommend the standard Viper series or the newer PST's with covers. The Razor is not your typical hunting scope but would do the job with extreme accuracy.

The other thing to consider is either way you go, if you later don't want that scope, the resell value of the Vortex scopes is pretty good. With their warranty, its a forever type deal like Craftsman tools so most people don't worry about getting a slightly used one.

I have a new PST and the quality is top notch. They are fantastic scopes, and go highly recommended. Buy with confidence (if you can find one)
