Re: Vortex Viper PST or Nightforce Benchrest?
Ok, I'm not going to quote all of the questions that arose in response to my post about the 24X PST. I'll just qualify my above post.
As I said, I like the PST, for what it is. It is a relatively inexpensive alternative to more expensive scopes, with its nearest competitor being the Nightforce line. To me, Nightforce is the best that you can get without spending twice as much to get something a bit better.
My experience with the PST was this. I got the scope, mounted it up and took it to the range. I put both of my rifles on the table. One had the NF 5.5-22X on it and the other had the 6-24X PST on it. I, and all of the guys there, did comparisons. We first looked through the NF and then the PST. All of the remarks were pretty much the same. They would look through the NF and say that's really clear, then they'd look through the PST and say that's pretty clear. Optically, the PST was pretty clear. I didn't think it was as clear as the NF, but again, it was half the price. The only way that I can articulate this point is that the NF was like looking through a window. The PST just didn't seem that clear. I do have to give the PST kudos though. I could see hardly any distortion at all. Certainly less than the last Trijicon Accupoint that I had. At this point, I was happy with the PST, until I started trying to zero it at 100.
I finally got it zeroed and discovered that I only had about 10 MOA of elevation adjustment left. I also noticed that I only had about the same amount of right windage adjustment left. I wasn't happy about that, but I wanted to shoot. While shooting, I'd get my usual tight group going and then it would start hitting some place else, a couple of inches away. It would group there a few rounds and then shift again. So, I double checked everything. When I went to start trying to shoot again, I discovered that I couldn't see through the scope unless my eye was off axis. In other words, I couldn't look straight through the scope. Apparently, I got a bad one. I called Vortex from the range, they emailed me a FedEx shipping label and off it went.
While mucking with the scope, I got to use the dials a bunch and made a couple of observations. First the PST does appear to be well built. It doesn't feel to be as robust as the NF, but built well none the less. I am not wild about the knobs. The knurling, checking, or whatever you want to call them on the knobs is way too fine. Yes, they do make gripping the knobs easy enough, but I did notice while messing with it that clothes and other hanging articles got caught up on them. They are sharp.
I'm not wild about the clicks either. They are very fine. Positive, but fine. I suspect that whatever detent the PST has is, it's pretty small. It doesn't take much force to over come them. It's pretty easy to make adjustments, and I can also see their being accidentally turned by clothing or even if sliding around on a fabric seat. When comparing the knobs on the NF, the NF's knobs have very course cut outs on the knobs that won't get caught on anything. It also takes a purposeful action to turn the knobs on the NF. The NF detents are also not as fine. When you need to go one click, it's easy to do. On the PST is was pretty easy to over shoot by a click or two.
Now I don't know if this was because mine was screwed up or what, but I noticed that after I set the elevation knob to zero and then did all of the cranking on it, after a while, the hash marks on the knob no longer lined up with the line on the scope body. I'm hoping that this was just because mine was bad.
Of course, it really isn't fair to compare the PST to the Nightforce. The NF should be better and I think it is.
It's only my opinion, but I feel that if you can afford a Nightforce, it's what you should go with. The PST is a nice scope and most will think it's nice enough. I'm just not in that camp. If you can't afford a NF, then you probably won't go wrong with the PST. I know that if I had to, I'd take a PST over any of their direct competitors, with the exception of Sightron SIII.
I am awaiting the return of my PST, but I just sold the rifle that I got it for. When I got to the range today, an opportunity came up to buy a Krieger barreled 700 put together by Don Geraci at a price that I couldn't say no to. So...now I'm debating on whether I'm going to keep the PST to put on top of my newly built 10/22 match rifle or sell it, because it isn't going on top of my new .308. I can see a NF 5.5-22X50 with an NP-R1 reticle in my near future.
