I'm going to be out in the Puget Sound area over the Christmas holiday and I plan to shoot with a friend out there. I'm tempted to bring my 260 along but I don't know the WA state rules for magazine capacity. I only own 20rd P-mags for this rifle (LR-260) so I don't want to get my ass in a crack from some stupid local law.

Do any WA residents know the rules regarding mag capacity for semi-auto rifles?

The other option is that I hustle up and finish building my 7mm/300 WSM, but I won't have enough time to sort it out before getting out there. The 260 is reliable and easy to handle.

your mags are fine. you cant hunt with them but just shooting wont be a problem

The only restrictions are for shotguns when Hunting.

The Issaquah range does not want more than 5 rounds put in the magazine at a time.

No State restriction on mag capacity that I'm aware of, other than when hunting its 5 round max as mentioned above. I use 30 round PMAGS all the time. Each range is free to make its own rules and from what I've seen the closer you get to the left coast the more restrictive the rules are. For instance at the Kenmore range near Seattle you can't even shoot prone or sitting unless you are a certified high power competitor.

Let me know if you are in the Port Angeles area....we are directly across from Victoria and have access to a good 950 yard shot on private property....if the fog stays out of the valley!

give me some notice and i am sure we can get some steel setup reasonably close to wherever you are staying. i like shooting in the cold it tunes the senses.

the KRR range in the kitsap peninsula is the only range I know of around here that allows full loading of the mags, Tacoma sportsman is 10 rds max, gig arbor is 8, renton fish and game is single load only.
that's about all I know.

i dont intend on derailing the OP thread, but where do you find this so called 5 round max rule? i have read through most of the Washington state RCW's and could not find anything relating to mag capacity during hunting, except for shotguns. it is my understanding that it does not apply to rifles.

It looks like you are right.
I just read the WA state regs on hunting firearms, and the 5 shot capacity I remember in the 1960s is gone, and there are many other changes with respect to cross bows.

I remember seeing it in the hunting regulations a while back, if that's changed for the better I'd be shocked. Haven't looked recently.

the only reason i ask, is the fact that i have disputed this before with fellow hunters who swear there is a rule, but are unable to produce it in writing. the only restriction i have found is the shotgun 3 shell rule for game birds. i have searched the game regulations, washington state RCW chapter 9.41, and WAC 232-12. there is no law that i have found that regulates mag capacity in a hunting rifle.

We just put in an offer for a house in Puget sound. Will need help finding places to shoot...hopefully 500 yards and further. I understand there was a club east of Tacoma that has a 500 yard range.

What else is there, and are there any competitions outdoors for either practical rifle (semi-auto), or precision rifle (bolt, or precision semi-auto)?

I have heard there is an indoor rifle league on friday nights, and while far better than nothing, I would prefer shooting outdoors if there is anything available.

You guuys let me know when you plan to go out again and I'll drive up that way..

As for mag capacity - I have dozensof 30rd mags and shoot them at the range all the time.

Perfectly legal, in fact I've shot them on the police range more than the civilian range with a b uddy of mine in LE.

If you want to stretch out even farther than that let me know. I have a place where I can go to 1400 yds+/- if I want easily, & 2K wth some work to set up. Just a ways south of Bellingham.

Practical rifle precision rifle match will be some time in late February. Check the Tri-county gun club schedule, and find out about new shooter orientation first. I can help you with getting a zero before the match if I'm still down near Portland.

Match is scheduled for 12 February 2011. You don't have to be a member to shoot, but do have to complete a safety orientation.
