Why didn't you go out to colorado by yourself then ? Unless I've hunted with a person before and know their "all in" from past hunts or travel,I don't depend on them for anything.I can only depend on my bird dogs.Their ready to go all the time.

Re: Want someone to hunt with in Western NY

My cousin lives there and knows where some elk are and knows the terrain where he hunts. He might be moving back to NY. I'm still down with going if I can find someone who has been there before. I don't feel like going that far and waste a lot of money on a hunch. I'm prepared to hike for miles to set up camp and stay for the 8 day season. Unlimited Rifle, Oct. 22-30. I'm going to try and do early bear in the Adirondacks if anyone is interested, and if I don't make it to Colorado then I am going to go to North Carolina and hunt with my other cousin and tag out down there. I know the deer are smaller but it doesn't matter, I like to hunt

Gotcha....I come "down with" the bad chits the other day after eating some Mexican food, but that's really not all that cool.

Other than that, unless you are "down with" hunting public ground with every other Tom, Dick, and Harry from the big city, hunting most anything in western NY is gonna be damn tough. Everything non public is posted solid, hunted HARD by the locals, and really not even worth asking about for permission because 999 time out of 1000 you'll be politely asked to leave and not come back.

The 'Dacks are not western NY, they are northern NY, and they are THICK, and mostly public...take a compass and a topo map, and forget about the GPS.

Per bear in the 'Dacks. Find Stillwater Reservoir, find McCarthy Trail off of the Stillwater Road. Drive as far as you can up the trail (4x4 recommended), then walk about 4 miles deeper.....just don't go past the yellow gate, that's posted/private. You might find a bear in there somewhere in early September when the Beech Nuts are right.

Call yer girlfriend/wife (or both as the case may be), before you leave Lowville, as cell service disipates rather quickly from there. Take what you need with you, food, full tank, drinking water, etc...a trip to town for a bag of chips and a six pack ain't at all worth it.

Do it alone, it's funner than trying to keep track of someone else's stupid ass........

Re: Want someone to hunt with in Western NY

I know that the Adirondacks are not in WNY. I'm just looking for new experiences, and maybe learn some different techniques. I hunt some land near me that is private. I much prefer private land because I've had deer stolen from me before. All of my hunting is done alone. I walk All day covering the whole plot of land that I have permission to hunt. I usually kick up 8-10 deer a day, the few other guys don't mind me spooking deer out of bedding areas.

The only technique you need for anywhere in NY is know exactly where shit is, hunt into the wind, move slow, and keep VEWY VEWY quiet.........

I still say go it alone. There's no guarantee that you'll score if you go with someone that's been there before.Thats why it's called hunting.I know people that went out west with a guide and didn't get a shot at anything. You'll appreciate it more if you go out and beat the odds. You'll also never know what'll happen unless you try,as the opportunity might not show itself again and you'll be kicking yourself for not going.Pep talk ends now,so take the skirt off, start conditioning yourself and do it.
I do most of my Bow hunting on state land and my rifle hunting on private land in the early season. After opening weekend, the city folk tend to stay home and watch football. With opening day rifle changed to a saturday,it's really messed up trying to get a jump on where the deer will be the days after.I try to let them settle down, but they usually go nocturnal and hide in the thickest crap they can find on private tree hugger land. When the opener was on a monday, the woods were for the local hunters that would take off and enjoy hunting without alot of pressure. Those days are over.Good Luck.
