Hi Guys,

I have an AR-15 in which I want to see if there is a way to shorten the brass throw. Currently my brass throws almost 10 feet away. This is unecessry. Is there a method anyone knows of to shorten the brass throw strength?

thanks,
Jason

Re: Want to reduce brass throw in AR-15.

Take the bolt apart and cut a few turns off the ejector spring. One ring at a time, as its easy to cut off more, very hard to put one back on. Messing with gas impulse will just affect the stroke. Gas adjustment only works on weapons with fixed ejectors.

I just use a brass catcher. Works great.

You can also just put a box to the right of your rifle to catch the brass. Might be a better option than modifying your rifle.

I just catch every round as they fly out in between shots, LOL. brass catcher or adjustable gas block, I am not sure how much effect the gas block would have?

Let me know.

Don't know why the link won't work. Cut and paste I guess.

Thanks Yippiekiay. I checked out the deflector but don't think I want to attach it to my AR. For what I use it for it would likely be in the way. I had a brass catcher and that was always in my way, caused jams, shifted around, and just caused more trouble than it was worth.

But thank you for your input. It is very much appreciated!

Good Shooting,

Jason

Re: Want to reduce brass throw in AR-15.

If you think your AR is bad, I have Sig 556s in a variety of flavors that all throw the brass 25-30'. Rather than fight it, I decided to use it to establish a defensive perimeter and keep zombies from creeping up on my 3:00.

Seriously, there was a post here not too long ago where someone just tied a bandanna (?) around the scope mount. The cases would be deflected downward by the small piece of cloth just enough to drop near the feet, but it didn't seem to adversely affect cycling as I remember.

I remember seeing that one right after I had made my deflector. I was ticked that I hadn't thought of it.

I have also put my pack near the ejection port and let them bounce back.

Re: Want to reduce brass throw in AR-15.

You think your AR is bad! FALs, HK91s and some AK variants throw brass a good 20-30 feet! Had some jack wagon pelting me with 308 brass half way across the range with his FAL....

Re: Want to reduce brass throw in AR-15.

This is great that I found this post...I was actually going to start my own because I wasn't sure who might've thought about something like this....

A buddy at work suggested this and I tried it. Works pretty good, I can post pics if you want. The "trick" he suggested was to go to Home Depot or where ever and buy any rubber type material that is adhesive backed. Cut in shape of brass deflector on rifle and apply. I found these black, textrured furniture pad stips and tried it out this weekend. Works great, my brass was no further than 3ft from where I was.

I like some of the other ideas and mods but this is simple, light and blends right in with the rifle. From 10 ft away, you'd probably never notice it.

Re: Want to reduce brass throw in AR-15.

Longest brass thrower I ever saw was a friend's Mini-14. It threw brass about 45' and all into a neat little pile. As a matter of fact, it grouped brass better than bullets downrange.

The heavier buffer or adjustable gas block would be the best things to try. They would/could help more than just the ejection objection you have.

This is the answer. Make sure you have an extra spring avalible IF you cut off too much. You could also "pull" the spring apart with some pliers if you get it too short.

Love your avatar Kenda!!

How does increasing the spring rate on the ejector throw brass a shorter distance? Since the rearward case velocity is a constant and the spring rate is increased I would assume it would put the brass farther out?

Re: Want to reduce brass throw in AR-15.

Cut coils to reduce the amount of static pressure placed on the ejector and then stretch the spring out to take up the room in the cavity. It's the same way I tune the ejector in all my bolt guns and they function just fine. Stopped throwing the brass 3 feet and now they land within 1 foot.

The spring in it's original configuration on my AR Creedmoor was so stiff that when the case was pulled out of the chamber the mouth was thrown against the chamber wall so hard, the mouth was severely damaged. After tweeking the ejector spring, the damage stopped occuring.

Re: Want to reduce brass throw in AR-15.

When you cut a spring you make it stiffer, that is what I am saying, not saying you are wrong. I'd like to understand why if what you are saying is actually correct that causes the brass to fall shorter which is counter-intuitive based on basic spring physics. If you cut it, you made it stiffer and increased the spring rate. Is it because it becomes so stiff that the case doesnt compress it enough and store the elastic energy for a good launch? That is what I would assume if cutting it produces this result.
