I have hunted Mule Deer my whole life and taken some great bucks but never taken a whitetail. I went to Ohio 2 years ago bow hunting and saw some awsome deer, but nothing came it range of the bow. I could have taken some great bucks with a rifle but you can't use a rifle back there. Let me know if your interested in coming to Utah Mule Deer hunting and my be we can work out a trade.

I may be interested in trading hunts. I have private land to hunt on. Are you thinking bow or shotgun or muzzle loader?

I know a place in Virginia you can hunt for cheap. I got two deer in five days, neither was a trophy by any definition, but my freezer's fairly well stocked with venison. Let me know if you want me to put you in contact with the dude.

Incidentally, you can hunt at this guy's place with a rifle no problem, but I doubt the shots will go beyond 100 yards.

The midwest states are where I would be going if I were you. In Alabama we can shoot two deer a day for 3 months but we do not grow them like they do in Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Iowa, ect.

Uh... Alabama has some very good WT - see here:

But Texas has more than everyone else.

Mike,
We do have some pretty good deer in Alabama. We went to a three buck per person limit season a few years back and a lot of clubs and a few management areas are practicing QDM with antler restrictions of 8 pt or better. A club close to me has a 130"+ rule on all bucks harvested. The doe population is still out of control. We can legally harvest two doe per day from Oct 15-Jan 31. Bow season starts Oct 15 and runs the entire season. Rifle season starts around Nov 20th thru Jan 31. One thing I really like is our season isn't all butchered up, meaning it's continuous with no gaps in between. Hope that makes sense, lol..

Don't forget Missouri and Kansas!

Re: Wanting to go on a Whitetail rifle hunt.

I was agreeing with the position that Alabama has some great hunting with very good critters. The 12 point in my first pic was shot dog hunting ( which I love!!!) in Lamar county. I have 10 point from there also just as good, but perfect typical, vs this non-typical.

One of the reasons we had such good hunting - was that we were a bit outlaw-ish. The limit then was one a day unless it was doe day. I have shot more than that on many days, and we had quit at noon more than once to clean deer all afternoon. BUT... we had plenty of deer and the land was not stressed by the over population. Historically, Alabama hunters did not, ever, EVER shoot does, talking about back thru the early 80's. In our local area, with GW that wouldn't leave the truck, we shot a lot of does. Only had to run thru the woods once, from a lost Mississippi sheriff deputy!!!

Since we did shoot lots of does, we had many quality bucks. Glad to see the regulatory view there has changed somewhat.... Live in TX now, much more management of the herd here.
