I’m trying Devcon putty for the first tim. I mostly use Marine Tex. Before spreading Marine Tex I usually warm it up a bit to help it flow easier and avoid air bubbles. Has anyone tried warming Devcon to flow better? Any insight would be appropriated.
Thank you
Donald

guess it would be worth trying it both ways and deciding,
but one of the things i like about devcon is that it doesnt run everywhere.
its fairly cool in my shop this time of year 50-55* and it works nice.
just try to think about how much material you really need and put it in the areas that need it.

I warm it up with a IR heat lamp so it heats up evenly. I usually bring it up to 95-100*F. Between that and my mixing method I’ve eliminated virtually all pinholes/air pockets. Work time is shorter but if everything is prepped and ready to go it’s not an issue. Only reason I’m trying Devcon is I was given a couple kits from a company I do work for.
Thanks
Donald

If you warm Devcon, be sure you absolutely have the right mixture. A little too much hardener, combined with heat. will drastically reduce work time. Don't ask me how I know.

I have seen guys who spread out Bondo in a way to minimize air bubbles... Never stir the mix, turn with a spatula.

How do you mix the devcon to eliminate bubbles

I’m a collision tech by trade. So I mix it just like I mix my mud. Fold it over itself and pull it back towards you while putting pressure. You don’t introduce air pockets and as you apply pressure and spread it thinner it forces out any micro bubbles..

Be carefull warming marine tex and similar products.
If you get it to 130-140 it will set almost imidiatly when it cools to room temp.

Nice if in a hurry.

I warmed up my Devcon by putting it on top of my water heater 24 hours before I planned to use it. Not sure what temperature it got it to but I always put my tomato seed tray on it to germinate them. Probably around 75 degrees as it feels slightly warmer than my room temperature of 70.
