Hi,
I have a 8 twist 30" barrel I would like to chamber up specially for Warner 198 Flatline bullets . I was wondering if there was any preference between the 300WSM or the 300 Rum.
I know the Rum is going to be harder on the barrel but is the extra speed worth it?
I have dies and brass for both I know I can load super accurate loads in my 300WSM with Berger 215 but was wondering if chasing top performance should I look at the RUM.
I am also interested in any information in regards to accuracy with these bullets in properly set up chambers as I know I will have to cut a shorter freebore.
The other question I have should I just go a 300 RUM and a Sierra 230 and shoot conventional bullets

I have a 9 twist 300 Norma 28” barrel and have a great load for the 230 smk and 198 flatline both. The 198 is running ~3150 and is a blast to shoot! It gets to 1000 fast! Performance is there as I stretch it out further but after 1500 yards I’ve had better luck with the 230, a lot of it is spotting. The 198 doesn’t kick up much signature hit or miss at 2000 yards. The 230 I can see both through the scope on a good day and spotter confirms. I’ve decided the 230 at 2950 negates the need for me to spend the extra money to shoot the more expensive flatline. This is not to say the 198 isn’t worth a try, they might fit your situation better than mine. Also my chamber is setup for 230 Berger but was easy to get the 198 to shoot at Warner’s recommend COAL, it’s a lot of jump but shoots very well.

I'd personally rather step up in caliber and BC than speed.

It sucks when a barrel goes inside 1000 rounds.

I watched Charles Greer shoot his record 10 shot group at a 1000Y benchrest match! Edit - with a 300WSM.

There's 300PRC now which is a good compromise between the two. My wildcat version, 30-375R has been a great cartridge, it's only 50 fps behind 300N in a longer barrel with 78.5 grains of powder.

Agreed.
I’m shooting 338/375ruger xl
It’s a little more expensive for bullets but barrel will last a little longer than the fast 30’s
I’m shooting 250gr Berger at 3025mv from 30”

Sorry I got the spelling wrong autocorrect got me.
I shot with Charles before he went to Australia and back then he was shooting a 300 Ackley and a Boots Obermeyer barrel.
Really nice guy.
