    Inside Programmable Road Signs

How many times have you driven by an electronic road sign like one of these?

This is the ADDCO portable sign. Today, you see what is on the inside, and how they are programmed to display important information.

*** WARNING YOU SHOULD NEVER TAMPER WITH THESE SIGNS ***

    1. The access panel on the sign is generally protected by a small lock, but often are left unprotected. Upon opening the access panel you can see the display electronics.

    2. The black control pad is attached by a curly cord, with a keyboard on the face.

    3. Programming is as simple as scrolling down the menu selection to “Instant Textâ€￾. Type whatever you want to display, Hit Enter to submit. You can now either throw it up on the sign by selecting “Run w/out saveâ€￾ or you can add more pages to it by selecting “Add pageâ€￾

** HACKER TIPS ** Should it will ask you for a password. Try “DOTSâ€￾, the default password.

In all likelihood, the crew will not have changed it. However if they did, never fear. Hold “Controlâ€￾ and “Shiftâ€￾ and while holding, enter “DIPYâ€￾. This will reset the sign and reset the password to “DOTSâ€￾ in the process. You’re in!

Careless and very stupid to mess with road construction signs. Those men are out on the highway exposed to vehicles. Motorist should be warned so they can slow down before getting to the road crews.

We deal with this crap all the time.

Wait... Your DOT crews are actually out on the road doing work? Where the hell do you live?! Around here they just throw a bunch of cones and signs up to slow traffic and create speed traps and they never actually work on the road. They were working on I75 south south of Atlanta for a good 10 years at about 5 miles a year maybe.

I tend to think that if you're dumb enough to need a sign telling you there is 'road work ahead' instead of simply paying attention to the cones/barrels/other traffic/construction vehicles and crew, you're probably too dumb to read the sign in the first place. Point being, if you're going to plow though a construction zone you're going to do it regardless of a sign's warning.

+1 it doesn't matter what the sign says, people will still blow past you like you're not there working. we had a guy run into a portable, 10'tall, bright orange stop light that was 2' off the edge of the road...dumbarse
