Watermark on a target?

Reading some past threads on a tall target test and Frank says to put a watermark on your target.

I guess decades spent doing printing makes my brain refer to a different type of watermark.

What is a target watermark and what's its purpose?

If I understand it correctly it is a horizontal line that aids in consistent hold on targets at greater distances.
In other words making the vertical hold more consistent against a nondescript background.
A white plate for example.

I call it the waterline. Same difference. If you and your system are "holding the waterline", it says you're doing all you can do as a shooter outside of calling wind. It's a measure of consistency at distance.

As you can see in the picture above, I'm holding the waterline, but not picking up on subtle wind changes at 660 yards. I'm shooting from an area protected from the wind, flat grey light, and no wind flags.
