Weatherby Revives a Classic: The Mark V® Deluxe Varmintmaster and .224 WBY

    Magnum Are Back!

Sheridan, WY – February 24, 2025 – Weatherby proudly announces the return of the Mark V® Deluxe Varmintmaster, a modernized take on Roy Weatherby’s legendary small-caliber hunting rifle. Weatherby is also bringing back .224 WBY Magnum ammunition, now hand-loaded at the company’s Sheridan, Wyoming facility.

Originally introduced in 1964, the Varmintmaster was built on a 6-lug bolt action, designed for high-velocity cartridges like the .224 WBY Magnum. The new Mark V Standard Short Action revitalizes this legacy, featuring a refined design that enhances precision while maintaining

Weatherby’s renowned craftsmanship. If you are familiar with Weatherby's current Mark V line, all rifles are built on a 9-Lug Magnum Action or a 6-Lug Standard Action. This new action is slightly longer than the original Varmintmaster action and compatible with the .308 Win family of cartridges. The reintroduction and modernization of the Varmintmaster will open some exciting doors for Weatherby in the future.

Modern Enhancements to a Classic Design The Deluxe Varmintmaster retains its signature Monte Carlo AA-grade walnut stock with a high-gloss finish, diamond-point checkering, and distinctive rosewood forend and grip cap. The barrel now features a threaded muzzle for brakes or suppressors and, most importantly, an updated 1:8 twist rate, This faster twist barrel will allow shooters to stabilize heavier bullets like the 80.5-grain Berger FBT for increased long-range performance.

Available in .224 WBY Magnum and .22-250, the new Vamintmaster blends heritage with modern ballistic performance, offering varmint and predator hunters a rifle that excels in accuracy, durability, and timeless style..224 WBY Magnum Ammunition: Now Hand Loaded In-House

To fully support the Varmintmaster’s return, Weatherby is now handloading .224 WBY Magnum ammunition at its Wyoming facility, catering to both classic and modern Varmintmaster rifles.

    Ammunition Options:

For original 1:14 and 1:8 twist barrels:

    37-grain HCB (4125 FPS)

    50-grain Hornady V-MAX

    55-grain Hornady Spire Point

    For modern 1:8 twist barrels:

    80.5-grain Berger FBT

Holy shit. A buddy has been asking for a couple years about his grandfathers 224 weatherby but I kept saying to leave it as is. Glad he can get ammo for it once again even if it is pricy, it’s at least a source of brass.
