A little history first. About 7 weeks ago I get a phone call from a former Marine, Chad Mercer that now works for the Dept of State. He tells me of this recent wounded warrior shoot where he meet a very special Marine. While im on the phone another call comes in from another former Marine also US Dept of State, Matt Jacques. They both tell me that they were recently blown away by the story of this recently wounded Marine scout sniper, Aaron Howell. Aaron was injured in Afganastan in April loosing both his legs and 8 of his fingers. Ironicly he still has his triggerfinger on his right hand and a thumb on his left hand which makes it possible for him to shoot. Both of these guys were amazed by this Marines ability to stay positive and overcome the setbacks. Anyway they tell me that Aaron was offered a rifle by FN and that he stated that he didnt need one as he had a rifle on order from GA Precision, A M40A1 Spec build. Sure enough a check of the orders located Aarons rifle in the back awaiting final bedding and finish. Both these Marines also wanted to make sure that the rifle was paid for for Aaron so we set up a plan for guys wanting to donate to call and help Aaron out. We also discounted the rifle significantly. inside of 4 weeks the rifle was finished and paid in full. Ok, here is the great part. Matt contacts the Sgt Major of Weapons Training Batalion Quantico and fills him in on Aarons story and the rifle. The Sgt Major, approves Range #4 Quantico to be open for Aarons use for as long as he wants on Saturday Nov 6th. Range #4 is the 1000 yard High Power Range for those that have never been there. So more plans were made, Matt contacted Eagle Industries who donated a Drag bag/mat. Center Mass who donated a real nice shooting stand that his wheel chair will fit under as well as a roller bag that it fits in with gear. The Quantico shooting club presented him with a lifetime guest pass to their club with a real nice plaque, the OIC of the Sniper Instructor school a really neat mug, opener and Sniper patch. An Austrailian sniper a neat rage folder and patch. Tony (Nomad) a Data book. Another former Marine Rob snuck me Aarons MST 100 and we got it mounted prior to my trip on the 4th.

So Fast Forward, I arrive on the 4th and meet up with Eric Reid (former GAP Smith and current instructor at the USMC PWS) on the 5th Eric and I take the rifle to the PWS and with prior approval from the OIC . We were allowed to fire and Zero the rifle in the PWS Test Shed where all the M40's have been tested for the past 30+ years. With Eric pulling butts and myself and Gsgt Packmann running the M40A1 through its paces to get it zeroed, The rifle turnes a 1 5/8" Group at 300 meters. Eric and I fill out a USMC Log book and its official Aarons M40A1 is officialy ready to go.

Next Morning we all meet at the 300 line on range #4 we all set up the gear, mount the rifle in the shooting stand and wait for Aaron to arrive. There are 30-40 people there. Lots of Former and current snipers. Ed Land, Jack Field. Guys from the Quantico Shooting club. Aaron has no Idea that his rifle is here, that the range is his and the group of people are here to honor him. At just after 9:00 Rob pulls up and Aaron along with his Mother make their way out to the line. He looks a little confused as he thinks he is comming to watch the club shoot F Class. As he is wheeled up next to me his eyes fixate on the lone M40A1 rifle on the line. I put my hand on his shoulder and say. "Some Clown from Missouri dropped this rifle off on the range this morning and said a guy named Aaron Howell would be by to shoot it" He continued to stare at it for a few seconds and Matt jumped in and introduced me as the Clown in question. Guys I cant desribe how good I felt at this very moment. Matt and a bunch of the others spoke and presented Aaron with kit and there condolences. The rest of the day was spent with Aaron shooting from 300 to 1000 yards. This Kid (24 Years old) can still shoot and shoot real well. rarely did he throw one out of the 10 ring. He shot over 200 rounds and loved every minute of it.

Below are random pictures of the weekend.

Aaron is a True Warrior, Great American and and Inspiration to all that meet him.

That is an excellent way to honor this soldier's service. I realize other's thanks wasn't why you did this but it certainly earned another notch of respect for you and the outfit you run.

Every single person involved deserves them.

Re: Weekend Shoot With Aaron Howell, Awsome Time!!

Im sure Matt will also post when he sees this, He has alot more info on Aaron and is spearheading the effort to continue to help Aaron. I made a couple phone calls that netted him more Ammo to shoot. Made him a Second bolt for his rifle today so he could keep his rifle Spec and have a bolt with a Knob to make it eaiser for him to shoot. Matts wife took 900+ photos and has alot better ones than me.

More to come out of this for sure. He Deserves it!!

Re: Weekend Shoot With Aaron Howell, Awsome Time!!

My hats off to you and the others that made this happen.
I have a friend that shoots at Quantico that was there watching. He was telling me the story earlier today.

Re: Weekend Shoot With Aaron Howell, Awsome Time!!

Fantastic story George,
Thank you for sharing it,it is heartwarming and very fitting for the week!

Aaron, thank you for your service and I hope we hear that the next time you are at the range, you are shooting in the F-Class match.

Re: Weekend Shoot With Aaron Howell, Awsome Time!!

You guys did an amazing thing for someone who deserves it. That is the way a wounded vet should be treated. He sacrificed so much for the country an we can hardly sacrifice anything close to what he did. You sure made his day and I am glAd to see that there are people out there like you to go out of your way to do something special for another that deserves it.

Re: Weekend Shoot With Aaron Howell, Awsome Time!!

That is awesome! Great thing to do George for a hell of a guy. SEMPER FI!

The lump in my throat is still there, what a way to pay tribute to a Great American Warrior!! A wonderful gesture of kindness by all!!

Re: Weekend Shoot With Aaron Howell, Awsome Time!!

George, you and your team are "top-tier" Your vision and compassion in honoring Aaron, a beautiful American, is one of the most heart-felt stories I've ever read. Thank you for sharing. God Bless Warrior Aaron, you, and your team.

Re: Weekend Shoot With Aaron Howell, Awsome Time!!

George,

My thanks to all of you who took part in this. As well as everyone else' efforts.

Aaron most definitely deserves all we can do. Like many others. Not much more I can say.

Re: Weekend Shoot With Aaron Howell, Awsome Time!!

Gents,

I want to personally thank George and GAP for stepping up, as I knew they would. From office manager who took call after call and donation after donation, George slashing the bill, flying out here, and walking Aaron through the history of the M40 and the path HIS rifle took from start to finish, and the trip to the PWS shop with Eric, right to the first time Aaron pulled the switch . . . .PRICELESS.

A little history:

I met Cpl Aaron Howell back on Sept 11, 2010 where I was the RSO for a WW shoot her in Virginia. There were 18 warriors, Aaron seemed to have taken the worst. Missing both legs above the knees, and missing all but the trigger finger on his shooting hand and the thumb on his support hand. He shot and talked with those volunteering, and we found out he was a devil dog... and then found out he was a hog.

I retrieved an FN A3G from the FN guys who were supporting the range (my ol' FN stomping crew, especially Jim Owens of the 8541 type) and Aaron crawled out of the chair eagerly to get behind the glass for the first time since he stepped on a plate charge in April of this year. If that wasn't enough, he proceeded to BLOW A HOLE in a LaRue pop up set down range. I mean A HOLE, clean through with 118LR.

At the end of the day we had a "shoot off" with AR platforms, a simple box/failure drill. Aaron couldn't load or work the safety with his injuries. We turned it on for him and he painted a masterpiece from the first round until he won the last "shoot off", it was beautiful to watch him work....yes, beautiful. His trigger control, follow through on controlled pairs was stunning to watch.

I am not ashamed to tell you that it was a moving and emotional event to watch the Wounded Warriors get back in the saddle, Aaron REALLY worked us over. Chad and I had to take turns working with him because it was very difficult to maintain composure watching this warrior try to work a rifle he was intimately firmiliar with just a few months ago. He struggled to load with a finger and what was left of his right hand. Trying to dial windage and adjust paralax was a daunting task for him, but he worked at it, found a way .. and did it.

Aaron told us in a following conversation that he had ordered an M40A1 from GAP, but he was not expecting to see it for 6 months, and that it didn't matter...he wouldn't be able to REALLY shoot it while at Walter Reed.....That was all that was needed to be said.

During our first conversation when I filled George in on the story of Cpl Howell, who to George was just a cat that called in and ordered a spec'ed M40A1. He NEVER even mentioned that he was a Marine, 8541, or a wounded warrior....THAT is the kind of humble man Cpl Aaron Howell is.

George was now direct on who the man was, now we set the wheels in motion. I told George I was researching a way to take donations to pay the tab, and once I did I would be in contact to make payments....he simply said "don't worry about that, just hav em' call here and say " I want to make a payment to the Cpl Howell M40.... easy day".

I told the story to some more Industry buds from my FN days, and folks I have met in my current gig....and all answered the same way, "what do you need from us".

I stopped in and used my <span style="font-style: italic">"Whenever your working a range here, swing by...and if you need anything, don't be afraid to ask".</span> that SGTMAJ Devaney offered me when we met last summer on Range 3. I told him the story and he simply said "I will have a range for you, just give me a date, semper fi brother".

It was an emotional task to try and present the donations on Saturday, and I even prempted that in the opening...choking up as I tried to explain WHY Aaron was an inspiration to me.

I watched the look on his face as he looked at me, then gazed past me at his new rifle. The look on his face was what it was all for, then there is the occupational therapy he got from feeling the recoil and sending over 200 rounds of 118LR down range. I was calling wind at the 1000 yard line at about 1515 (we started at about 0920), I was loading the M40 for him and reached for another box of LR and he said "hey bro, after these we can pack it in, the shoulder is feeling it now".

Good shit fellas, that is all I can say, gives me the warm and fuzzy.

Thanks all over to all involved and helped in one way or another.
Abolute thanks goes to the following:

Americansnipers.org (VJ especially)
Center Mass, Jeff Felts

Re: Weekend Shoot With Aaron Howell, Awsome Time!!

Agreed- thanks for sharing the story George and Matt. Just in time for Veteran's Day. Please let me know if any further donations are needed. Aaron shouldn't have to pay- he's paid enough.

Great way to thank a Vet.
